Bikes in car pool lanes?

1 of 1

New lanes to cut congestion for car sharers on motorways are expected to be announced by the Government, but there is no indication whether motorcycles will also have access to the ‘car-pool’ stretches.

The idea has been used in the United States since the 1980s, and has proved popular in cities such as Los Angeles, Washington and Seattle. In the U.S. the lanes are open to cars carrying two or more people, and any motorcycle.

The UK schemes are likely to be in places where roads are already being widened, or the hard shoulder will be opened to create an extra lane. The first likely sites could be part of the soutbound M1 and northbound M3.

We want to know whether you’d welcome car pool lanes and if you’d use them. Email matt.wildee@emap.com, or post your thoughts on the ‘dedicated commuter lanes’ thread in Have Your Say by clicking here.
