Bike-specific signs beat Gatsos

Money-grabbing bureaucrats will hate to hear it but an experiment with bike-specific warning signs has worked so well it’s hard to see why anyone serious about safety wouldn’t use them instead of speed cameras.

A trial on the B974 Cairn o’ Mount road saw ‘bike collisions’ fall from 12 in the three years (resulting in two deaths and 15 injuries) previous to 2002 to zero in the years since.

Chief Inspector Cliff Stewart of Grampian Police said: ” High visibility signs identifying potential hazards for motorcyclists were erected along that route. Since then there have been no reported collisions involving motorcycles on that stretch of road. ”

Aberdeenshire Council has now decided to extend the scheme to the A93 from Aberdeen to Perth and Kinross via Royal Deeside and the Glenshee ski area. The council has hooked up with Grampian Police, Perth & Kinross Council and Tayside Police to target the A93 between Peterculter and Blairgowrie. The yellow-backed signs show a motorcyclist and a hazard warning sign.

A spokesman said: ” The sign and location have been identified for situations which have, or could have posed difficulties for motorcyclists in particular, although they are relevant to all motorists. ”

Nice to see not everyone sees Gatso cameras as the only solution…
