Too many Indians

Indian Motorcycles faces a legal battle with American baseball team the Cleveland Indians.

The two sides are arguing over the use of the ” Indian ” script logo. The Cleveland Indians claim that the use of the ” Indian ” name without a motorcycle reference infringe the trademarks on their own logo. The baseball team are opposing the right of Indian Motorcycles to trademark its own logo for licencing deals including a clothing range and cafes.

Both company names have exists for around 100 years. The Indian Motorcycle name began in 1901, fourteen years before the Cleveland Indians were formed.

Indian Motorcycles have filed a lawsuit to clear up the issue. If the decision goes against them, the 101-year-old script logo may have to be re-designed.
