Phoning and driving could be outlawed

The Government is about to begin a 12-week consultation period that could see drivers banned from using mobile phones behind the wheel.

From August 20, the Department of Transport, together with motoring organisations and road safety groups, will examine ways at reducing the number of accidents caused by drivers chatting on mobile phones.

Recent research from Canada suggests that people who phone and drive are statistically four times more likely to be involved in an accident than other motorists.

The Home Office has already said it wants to make driving without proper control of a vehicle an endorseable offence, punishable by points and a fine.

But some groups such as the British Medial Association and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) feel this doesn’t go far enough and have called for a total ban.
