A scholarship in commemoration of Joey Dunlop has just been launched for budding TT racers.

It’s backed by MCN and our parent company Emap, the ACU and the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI).

The joint initiative, which is also supported by the Isle of Man Tourist Board, is designed to help new talent make the leap from the Newcomers Manx GP to the Isle Of Man TT and will be awarded to the top three riders in the Manx Newcomers Race every year.

MCN’s publishing editor Adam Duckworth said: ” Joey Dunlop was such a motorcycling giant – and such a kind, decent bloke – that we’re pleased to back any scheme that helps his memory live on.

” The fact that this scholarship helps newcomers at the event Joey loved makes it all the more fitting. ”

MCI chief executive Mark Foster said The Joey Dunlop Scholarship would show the whole riding community the affection in which the late man was held.

He told MCN: ” We are proud to back this scholarship programme in memory of Joey Dunlop who made sporting history by setting a new world record of 26 wins in the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy Races.

” The scheme has the full blessing of Joey’s family and we hope it will prove a fitting tribute to the great man’s memory. We want to encourage people to take part in the Isle of Man TT and help develop their racing careers. ”
