Security at your fingertips

Kawasaki is pioneering a new fingerprint-based ignition system factory sources have told MCN.

The system can function on anything from bikes and cars to windows and televisions.

A physical ignition key would still be required, but an immobiliser would require one of up to five stored fingerprints to be pressed against the sensor window.

” Previously, this technology has been the sole preserve of high-technology IT companies, ” said Thatcham’s Vehicle Electronics Research Manager, Mark Inman, ” And it’s the cost and restrictions of use that have kept it there. The current stuff needs heat from your finger to work – that could be a problem riding your bike in Britain. It’ll be interesting to see if they’ve defeated that. ”

For the full story, you’ll need to pick up a copy of MCN, out on Wednesday, April 3, this week.
