BMW riders aren’t exactly known for behaving badly – but that didn’t stop the genteel city of Charleston, West Virginia, banning an owners’ convention amid visions of violent Hell’s Angels types smashing up their historic houses. Funnily enough, they abruptly changed their minds when mayor Jay Goldman pointed out that the visitors would bring in a million dollars a day.

IF you came around after dropping your bike to find a robot beside you, you’d probably think it was down to that knock on the head. But for boffins at the University of California, it’s for real – they’re working on a roadside rescue system consisting of an army of droids linked to a network of cameras. The idea is that if you fall off, a robot races to you and provides a two-way video link between you and the emergency services.
