So that’s what Honda meant by ‘big bang’

Melbourne based Australian artist Eamon O’Toole has created this sculpture as a tribute to five-time 500cc GP champion Mick Doohan. Don’t be alarmed, the bike is a full-scale model… not a chopped up ex-Doohan machine.

Modelled on his 1996 Honda NSR500 and entitled ” Big Bang ” the sculpture stands three metres high and over two metres long. It consists of over 300 individual pieces suspended in a wire frame.

” I love bike racing and used to go to Philip Island to watch Mick race ” said O’Toole ” I started thinking about the engine and it’s name and this sculpture developed. ”

It is made of heat-moulded plastic and aluminium covered in silver and gold leaf. O’Toole went to extraordinary lengths to make it as accurate as possible, he even managed to get details from the Japanese factory.

It is currently on display at the Ipswich Global Arts Link Gallery. No, it isn’t in East Anglia, it’s in Queensland, Australia.
