How do you make a Trophy churn out 1200bhp?

1 of 1

WHAT makes 1200bhp and does a standing quarter in under seven seconds and is doing 200mph by the time it gets to the end.

The surprise answer is a Triumph Trophy… but perhaps not the one you are used to seeing at your local RATS gathering.

Australian drag racer Jay Upton has used the British bike’s 1200cc engine as the basis for his assault on the drag racing world standing quarter record of 6.06 seconds.

But the engine looks nothing like the Hinckley factory intended. It has been bored out to 1409cc and been given new crankcases, barrels, head and crank to cope with the huge power. Everything is reinforced to prevent it exploding.

The head is held on by 10 half-inch bolts because the 50psi supercharger which provides the bulk of the power would blow a standard head to bits. The fuel system consists of 18 nozzles which dump a nitro-methane mix into the engine at a rate of 30 gallons every minute
