Dartford Crossing toll to be scrapped for bikes

RIFLING through your many pockets for the 40p required at the Dartford Crossing will be nothing but a memory from the beginning of 2003.

The Highways Agency, which has overall responsibility for the bridge between Essex and Kent, has decided it’s not worth the hassle of waiting for us to find our shrapnel.

By the time we’ve pulled off our gloves and scrambled around for the coins, then kitted up and ridden off again, they could have whipped through another dozen Mondeos at a quid a go.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: ” Motorcycles are only one per cent of our revenue and they hold things up, which is why they are going to be allowed through for nothing. ”

MAG spokesman Phil Neale was delighted. The organisation has long been campaigning for the charge to be dropped for motorcyclists.

The £1 charge for cars will stay in force.
