50mph signs go up on the Cat and Fiddle

The speed limit on the famous Cat and Fiddle run was cut on Monday from 60mph to 50mph.

As signs warning of the new limit went up police were already in place, lurking for speeders on the stretch of road between Macclesfield and Buxton.

The change is meant to be temporary to allow the local council to gather evidence that a cut in the speed limit will result in lower casualty rates.

Macclesfield’s principal traffic engineer Steve Whitehurst said: ” We want to see if it has any effect on the number of accidents – then we will have some information to study as part of the consultation process.

” If there’s no evidence that it improves safety, we will not go ahead with it. ”

If you have a view, put it in writing to J B Hillaby, Principal Administrative Officer, Town Hall, Macclesfield, Cheshire SK10 1DS. Letters have to arrive by August 24.

Local rider Stuart Pickford saw the signs going up. He said: ” The signs aren’t all that clear – and I couldn’t believe a police officer was up there looking for speeders already. ”
