Can I re-use an old tyre?

Q. Is it acceptable to re-fit a motorcycle tyre? I replaced the rear tyre on my 2007 CBR600RR last year as I was going on a long trip and didn’t want the hassle of changing it when I was away.

Now that one has worn out I’d like to re-fit the original, but some garages refuse to do it. The tyre has been kept dry, in the dark and has a 3.5mm tread depth.

A. I think they are being very over-cautious. The tyre’s bead that seals it onto the rim will not have stretched, so it is still airtight. As long as you are happy with the tyre’s history and check its condition carefully before you go ahead, you should have no problems.
