Q. I’ve read numerous forum postings about de-restricting an Aprilia Tuono R
but can’t find a definitive answer.

I’ve just bought the latest model and intend to keep the original exhaust at the moment. Is it still restricted, and if so, what needs to be done?

A. Every model of the Tuono R comes into the UK restricted to 100bhp, but it’s relatively straightforward to liberate about 20 more horsepower. Take airbox lid off and you’ll see a restrictor near the inlets that needs removing, it’s held in place by one Phillips screw.

Next, check the ECU, there’s a small block connector where it plugs into the loom that has a blue/green wire in the bottom left corner corner, that needs clipping.

Finally there’s a huge metal perforated cone or block inside the exhaust can. The silencer is held on by one retaining bolt and two springs, when you take it off you’ll see the cone held in place with two spot welds.

Grind them away, remove the cone, bolt the can back on and you’ve got a full-power Tuono R.

Do you have a Tuono R? MCN Compare could save you money on your motorcycle insurance.
