When you’re sorting out insurance for your bike, you might think you’re getting insurance for just your bike and nothing else, but an increasing number of motorcycle insurers are also offering insurance cover for your helmet and clothing should they be damaged due to an accident.

Most policies will offer to replace your damaged gear in the event of a spill, but you’ll want to make sure it covers the complete value of your kit, especially if your helmet and other items of protective kits are expensive. Many helmet and leather policies only cover your gear up to a certain amount, £1000 for example, so check you’re happy with the limit of the cover

Most insurers will offer discounted helmet and leathers cover if you purchase it along with your motorcycle insurance, and despite the name it’s not just restricted to your lid and leathers – it includes gloves, jackets, trousers and boots too.

It’s worth noting that most insurers will only cover your kit if it’s damaged in an accident, and not in case of theft. If you want your motorcycle gear covered for theft you should add it to your home insurance just to be safe.
