BMW’s R1200RS slipped in under many a rider’s radar when it was launched in 2015 and didn’t even arrive in dealers until halfway through that year.

It completed the German firm’s boxer-twin line-up of the day, all of which featured it’s then new 125bhp water-cooled motor, but it (and the naked R version) always lived in the shadows of the headline-grabbing R1200RT tourer and the globe-trotting R1200GS.

That’s a shame because it’s a hugely capable sports tourer in every sense. It excites and relaxes in equal measure and combines a big chunk of the luxury and long-distance comfort of the RT with a fruity twist. It looks pretty funky, too with its snazzy S1000RR-a-like asymmetric lights, upside down forks (no ‘funny’ front end here) and radial Brembos.

With grunt pouring from its sticky-out cylinders the flat twin is long-legged and flexible, sounds like a race bike on the pipe and is as happy scratching through corners as it is melting motorway miles. Find a fully loaded RS and things like cruise control, heated grips, an up/down quickshifter, keyless ignition and electronic suspension and you’re never left wanting more.

In its four-year life it’s proven to be well built, reliable and although servicing isn’t the cheapest, BMW main dealers are a friendly and helpful bunch. Better still you can find early examples for not a lot of cash, which truly makes the BMW R1200RS an unsung sports touring hero. It was replaced by the BMW R1250RS in 2019.

BMW R1200RS long-term test

Former MCN Editor Andy Calton spent a year living with the R1200RS and found the £13k bike to be capable but a little expensive with a fuel tank that's too small.

What makes the R1200RS so special is that it can do just about anything. Weighing 236kg, it’s no lightweight, but it’s sportier than you’d imagine, not to mention crisper and more agile than a pure-bred tourer.

Its tubular steel chassis is nicely balanced, has sweet steering and gives you the confidence to dart cleanly through corners with a big smile on your face. Radial Brembo calipers have serious bite and 45mm non-adjustable S1000RR-style forks are laced with more feel and control than BMW’s usual Telelever set-up, especially in the wet.

There’s little rocking or pitching from the big Boxer engine, or the updated ‘EVO Paralever’ shaft drive system to upset handling, either.

BMW R1200RS left turn

Find an RS with semi-active suspension and the damping control constantly reacts and adjusts to suit road conditions, he way you ride and is easy to fine tune at the touch of the button. Preload is electronically adjustable to account for luggage and pillion loads, too.

The electronic suspension also helps with ride quality, stability, help the tyres find extra grip and supports you when you’re pushing on.

So, the R1200RS does the sporty really well (some owners have even taken them on trackdays) and will easily take care of the daily commute, although it’s a squeeze through tight traffic, but it’s born to tour. It’s supremely comfortable and many owners have done big miles on them around Europe with ease.

The BMW R1200RS's dimensions mean it’ll handle two-up work, especially as adding more suspension support is only the flick of a button away, but if you’re going to do a lot of miles loaded with luggage and a pillion, a more spacious R1200RT is a better bet and the six-cylinder K1600 better still, but with those you lose much of the RS’s playfulness.

Next up: Reliability
4 out of 5 (4/5)

First seen powering the refreshed 2013 R1200GS this evolution of BMW’s mighty 1170cc flat twin gets partial liquid-cooling, ride-by-wire and more lead in its pencil - up from 109bhp to 125bhp.

But its headline power figure is a mere side dish, because while the RS will gallop along at a fair old rate when you thrash it (although it gets vibey at high rpm) and will wheelie with the electronics turned off, it’s all about its low and midrange grunt and the dark, throaty exhaust bark that accompanies it.

BMW claims 92ftlb of torque, which is a lot and will put an Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 and Ducati Panigale V4 in the shade. It translates into instant, crisp acceleration no matter where you are in the revs or what gear you’re in.

Calm and friendly when you’re cruising and surprisingly fiery when you’re in the mood, too, it’s this virtuous Jekyll and Hyde character that makes R1200RS such a great sports tourer.

Elsewhere, the gearbox is generally smooth, especially with the optional quickshifter/blipper fitted, but slightly clunky at low speed. Expect around 56mpg for normal riding, which will give you theoretical fuel range of 222 miles from its 18-litre tank - an easy 200 between stops in the real world.

Next up: Value
5 out of 5 (5/5)

Owners are glowing in their praise of the R1200RS’s fit, finish and reliability with words like ‘premium’, ‘outstanding’ and ‘faultless’ being bandied about in our readers’ reviews. There’s the odd report of corrosion, a few centre stands that need repainting and minor electrical glitches, but in general the BMW R1200RS's problems are minimal, and it is standing the test of time well. It uses little oil and there are no reports of major mechanical issues.

Next up: Equipment
4 out of 5 (4/5)

BMW servicing isn’t cheap, but essential to maintain its bomb-proof reliability and owners have nothing but good things to say about dealer service.

If you're considering an R1200RS, the other bikes to look at are the Triumph Sprint GT 1050, Kawasaki Z1000SX or Honda VFR1200F.

Equipment

4 out of 5 (4/5)

In standard trim the R1200RS comes with few goodies, but you do get ABS, basic rider modes and traction control, but official accessories and ‘packs’ available at the time included every performance and touring goodie imaginable.

Owners’ greatest hits are keyless ignition, quickshifter/blipper, cruise control, heated grips and semi-active suspension. Aftermarket favourites include non-BMW pannier and top boxes for more space, crash protection, radiator guards and huggers. Many riders install a set of BMW R1200RS bar risers to make the riding position a little more upright.

4 out of 5 An excellent all-round sports tourer.

Year: 2017

Annual servicing cost: £250

An excellent all-round sports tourer. Very handsome in the blue/white paint scheme.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

Good handling and ride quality. Riding position comfortable (one-up) and will do a full tankful without discomfort.

Engine 4 out of 5

Strong performance with a broad power range. Not the smoothest or most characterful of engines though. It felt less refined than subsequent R1250s.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

No mechanical issues and build quality is good. A pain to keep clean thanks to the tubular chassis and minimal mud protection though.

Value vs rivals 4 out of 5

Expensive to buy (new) but good fuel consumption (55mpg on tour). 6k mile service intervals.

Equipment 4 out of 5

Well-featured accessories and accessory packages which cover everything you could reasonably want, although it will bump up the initial price considerably. Good as a second-hand buy as most bikes appear to have left the dealers well-specced. The biggest gripe for me is the poorly-designed screen that generates a lot of wind noise, even in the highest position (I'm 5'8"). I left it in the low position with less protection from the elements but quieter overall.

Buying experience: Dealer experience very good (BMW Motorrad).

4 out of 5 Best all rounder today?

Version: R1200RS Sport SE

Year: 2018

Annual servicing cost: £350

Best aspects include engine: Torquey, powerful with immense shove in the mid range, yet combines this with frugal petrol consumption averaging 55mpg, Handling is great but bizarrely a little more ponderous at slow speeds than the bulkier RT, whose rake and trail plus set back bars allow for more slow speed control. The RS is super stable at high speeds and a real A road beast where its handling is sublime in the bends. Loads of overtaking punch in any gear and plenty quick enough for any scenario on the roads...look elsewhere if a track bike is what you want. With luggage fitted it makes for an effortless and comfortable tourer, at least with risers fitted to the bars. I fitted Helibar risers which bring up and back the bars just enough to prevent lower back ache. Plenty of legroom, somewhere between a GS and a sports bike, so not so cramped it gets uncomfortable but not as upright as a GS. Makes for a more engaging and sporty ride than a GS too (I've owned both).Reliability has been very good bar a faulty oil level sensor (they all do that sir). Some bikes can suffer with engine corrosion but that affects fewer than the forums might suggest (you only hear the bad and rarely anything when nothing goes wrong!). I've had mine a year and so far its been faultless bar the one intermittent sensor but that doesn't matter to me as the oil level is easily read using the sight glass on the side of the engine. Build quality is generally excellent all bar the switch gear. BMW haven't updated this in years not even on the latest bikes, and it's cheap, plasticky and some of the whizzy wheels have been problematical for some owners as have the info/trip switches. They ted to stick but I reckon that's mainly down to poor maintenence. People tend to spray wd40 into them which is a bad idea. It forms a thin sticky film which just makes things worse. Best thing is compressed air in a can just to keep the switches free of any dust or debris. Nothing more needed. Shaft drive is great. It's smooth and pretty easy to maintain. BMW now have a cardan shaft free inspection for older 1200's and 1250's, and will replace the entire shaft FOC at 38K miles, but it's straightforward to do annual oil changes for the rear final drive pinion yourself and to drop the shaft out to inspect and grease it every 5 to 10K miles. Not much goes wrong if the bike is properly maintained and herein lies the problem....There are reports of issues, including some minor corrosion but I do think that's down to improper care in many (not all) cases by the owners. As well finished as it is, the bike still needs care an attention. keep it regularly cleaned, dry it off properly (use a pet drier to get into the engine nooks and crannies), apply some form of protection to it (ACF50 is ok if regularly applied but Lanogaurd is better) and there's no reason your bike shouldn't still look mint at 10 years old. Mine is showroom at 6 years old.Final tip for home mechanics is to twice annually check, inspect and carry out an easy service of the exhaust flapper valve. These can fail IF neglected. Whilst there is the odd solenoid failure (these can be replaced) if the flappy valve seizes, that's a whole new header section. It's easy to service, and ones that have seized have done so because owners will not keep the things clean and in good condition, allowing carbon build up to seize the top bearing housing. it's a 30 minute job to remove the exhaust, remove the valve plastic cover and the servo cables to get to the valve to clean the spring and top turret and clean any carbon from the inside you find. They won't go wrong if you do that.Standard, the screen is pretty useless and most owners change them. The MRA vario screen is one of the better choices. Also, whoever thought of siting the sat nav cradle on the bars was an idiot. You have to take your eyes off the road too long to read it, so best using an aftermarket mount for the cradle and relocating it above the instruments which is easy to do.Engine can be clattery but you get used to that. Clutch is nice and light and brakes are awesome. 320mm discs gripped by 4 pot Brembos have immense stopping power and feel.Tyre choice may be a personal thing but the RS can be quite sensitive to pressures. The recommended 42/36 I've found to be spot on. If the front drops by more than 1.5psi it can quite dramatically affect slow turn in and you lose confidence in the grip. Meztler Sportec SEs are the best choice for this bike. They suit it perfectly and last thousands of miles.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

Fab all rounder. Out handles both the RT and the GS. Not quite as comfortable as either, not quite got the weather protection, but as a compromise between the two, it's the perfect bike. Best on sweeping A roads and good B roads. RT or GS more suited to boring Motorway runs or longer stints in the saddle but the RS can be set up to be all day comfortable too. Has a sporty energetic excitement to it the other two haven't.

Engine 5 out of 5

Smooth, punchy jewel of an engine; immense mid range and way fast enough for anyone on real world roads. Has character in spades unlike most 4cl machines. Track day fiends should look elsewhere.

Reliability & build quality 4 out of 5

apart from a few niggles (switchgear isn't the best and screen is pretty rubbish) mine's survived 5 winters, has been cherished but ridden and still looks showroom. There's a small amount of paint bubbling under exhaust exit part of heads, but onl;y very slight and to be expected being exposed to the elements for 6 years. Other than that, it's faultless and beautifully screwed together.

Value vs rivals 3 out of 5

BMW parts are expensive. Preventative maintenance is the key to avoid big bills so taking care of things at home where you can can save you £££££'s in the long term. Home servicing is easy once out of warrant...it's a boxer after all!

Equipment 4 out of 5

equipment list is impressive but you pay extra for all the goodies unlike other brands. Dynamic ESA is worth having on bikes made on or after 2019 when they went to a more fully active set up. Power modes genuinely useful. Quickshifter great on the way up, not so great on the way down but why bother when the clutch is so light and easy to use? Satnav a great addition and tyre choice more important than on other models.

Buying experience: Dealer bought as a part ex. It's worth paying a little extra to get the exact bike you want. For the RS, the better kitted out one is the Sport SE. It comes with most bells and whistles but shop around and you'll find a good used low miles example with every option box ticked and save yourself loads.

By far the best bike I have ever owned (preiously had: Katana 750, Yamaha VMX1200, Triumph Speed Triple, Ducati Streetfighter). Superb characterful engine, power and flex everywhere you might need it. Also, overall very high quality build and feel.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Just brilliant. I leave it in Road mode most of the time, but good have options. Quick shifter is lots of fun. Overall a very very safe bike to ride. ESA masterful at smoothing out everything. I can do over 300 miles a day with very little that aches when you finally get off. Seat is the most comfortable of about 20 different bikes I’ve owned. I find it way more comfortable than either the RT or the GS both of which I’ve also done substantial miles on.

Engine 5 out of 5

It’s an absolute stonker of an engine. You love a boxer or maybe you don’t. Hang up any prejudice and try one. Very very smooth for a twin.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

It’s 7 years old and looks virtually brand new still. Very close inspection shows only two very slight areas of corrosion, one near front of engine and one on final drive but each is tiny and not advancing. Treat it well and it would seem this bike will look as good in ten years’ time

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Easy to service. Valves checked at 24k all well within limits. Fuel economy much better than other equally powerful bikes I’ve owned.

Equipment 5 out of 5

It’s the whole package really. It just suits me and a very varied choice of riding. Bimble out to the shops. It’s a pleasure. Blast around favourite back roads. It’s a pleasure. Tour all day. Great.

My previous review of this very bike was in 2016 when it was only 6 weeks old!It is now over 7 years old and has over 29000 miles on it It has been mainly for long summer European trips, two up, full luggage. Each summer we cover 3000 miles or so in a couple of weeks as far as Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia etc as well as return through Slovakia, poland etc. Mechanically and electrically this has been with out fault at all! I have to say I still love the bike. It is remarkably comfortable, my wife agrees!

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Can’t fault the ride quality, helped enormously by the ESA.Brakes outstanding. ABS not intrusive but very effective in all weathers and conditions

Engine 5 out of 5

Engine pulls like a train. Huge torque and easily quick enough. The sound is great, with the quick shift blipper and the pops and bangs on overrun. Has been totally reliable after almost 30000 miles 👍

Reliability & build quality 4 out of 5

Corrosion ! Main stand and parts of chassis/frame have a lot of surface rust. This has been like this since it was about 3 years old. Mentioned at dealers when getting serviced and got a shrug of shoulders 😂. That is the only issue I’ve had with this bike since new. Engine is superb. Gearbox clunks (like only a bmw can) shaft drive is fabulous.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

50mpg even if ridden very hard and fully loaded. Uses very little oil. I use Dunlop sportmax Roadsmart IV tyres now. They are excellent.

Buying experience: Bought from bmw main dealer over 7 years ago, had serviced there each year until recently. Go to an independent service centre now. Will actually be looking to buy new bike in 12 months or so and it’s hard to see why I will not just get the R1250RS, as I really can’t see anything that I think comes close to this for true Sports Touring!

I've always looked down on BMWs and especially boxers as boring and a bit... odd. I've had a long diet of sportsbikes and naked. My last bike was KTM Duke 790 that I'd tuned razed around the lanes on. Then I agreed to do a tour to the Pyrenees. No way I was doing that on the 790. I was looking at Tracer 900s etc when I saw an RS local to me for sale. Hey I can do the tour and sell it afterwards right? First test ride I knew I was in trouble, it was fun and really great to ride. I did the pyrenees on it and after 2,500 miles of wafting about France... let's just say it didn't get sold and it's taking me to France again this year. This bike does everything with complete calm. Looks like I am the biker I used to rib.

Great all rounder. The engine is ideal for road use with lots of low down torque making it very easy to ride as well as being good fun. It is very well made I ride every day all year around and with the help of corrosion blockers it has stayed in great condition.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

The brakes are very good. It’s the first bike I’ve had with ABS on the front which does not cut in too early when braking hard. Still does it on the back.

Engine 5 out of 5

Lots of low down torque and easily fast enough. The power delivery makes It feels as if I have more confidence to open the throttle earlier than some of my previous bikes. This can make it good fun and probably safer.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

Probably the best quality bike I’ve owned everything has a feeling of solidity. Having said that it could do with being a bit lighter although this is not noticeable when riding

Value vs rivals 3 out of 5

It’s a BMW!

Equipment 4 out of 5

Michelin Pilot Road 6 are top notch in all condition I would not put anything else on it. Most of the accessories are on a par with the rest of the bike and work very well with two exceptions, bloody electronic key thing, this works as intended but I simply do not see the point. It dropped out of my pocket one drizzly evening, by the time I noticed the idiot light telling me something was wrong I was miles away. I retraced my steps I’m the gathering darkness, going three times around every roundabout as I had noticed my right pocket was open. I had almost got back to my starting point when I saw something in the middle of the road in a left handed and promptly ran over it. You go where you look right? I retrieved the key and it still works but would prefer a normal Key. The other thing is the quick shifter which only a mechanical sadist would use for down changes.

Buying experience: I got the bike online from Ocean BMW in Portsmouth and they were excellent. Cannot say the same for my local BMW dealer unfortunately

Comfortable slightly sporty long distance tourer. Good at being an all rounder, with a realistic seat height. For me, the original screen is not adequate, and I could never get it to either offer protection, or get rid of buffeting. An aftermarket screen is a must.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

Fitting Brembo pads to the front sharpens up the braking. Original pads are Brembo, but have less initial biting power.

Engine 4 out of 5

It's around the right level for the road. It's a boxer, an still has some character to it.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

I had a few RS's, and the reliability has been fine. No issues with quality. One of the models I had did need to have the exhaust servo replaced under warranty.

Value vs rivals 4 out of 5

It needs servicing every 6000 miles. I am a high mileage rider, and normally need between 3 and 4 services a year. The less intrusive services are around £250, with the big ones, around £400.

Equipment 5 out of 5

It depends on the model, but equipment levels are high. Base models have less kit, but the SE has most items fitted.

4 out of 5 R1200RS, my favorite all-around bike.
06 June 2022 by Roscoe Skipper

Version: Lupin Blue/White, all options

Year: 2016

A great road bike capable of being a day canyon carver to full on touring bike.Transmission is clunky, by far the worst thing about it, and the dash on the 1200s has three different styles and I dislike them all. But I still strongly recommend it, especially now prices have dropped.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

There’s something special about a BMW: the BMW suspension has that magic that makes a heavy bike feel much lighter than it is. But the RS IS a light bike at 520 lbs, at least light for a bike that’s touring-capable. The OEM brakes were grabby and I switched them out for ERC in the front and Galfers in the rear, now they’re as good as any I’ve ever had on a bike. The big difference with the RS (and the R) from the GS is the suspension is lower and they have forks rather than the telelever, which I prefer, as I don’t take passengers. The seat is not very good (for me), and I popped for a Russel Day Long for long and travel days, the stock works fine for short days.

Engine 5 out of 5

I love this engine, I was a diehard Airhead and K bike fanatic, passed on the oil head engines altogether. The Wethead engine is a joy, with lots of power and low end torque. The sound is pretty good with just the stock cans, but I did switch out to an Akrapovic slip-on and enjoy the popping off-throttle. One of the best all time engines. I didn’t find enough of a difference with the 1250 engine to trade up, besides, there’s not a more beautiful color scheme than the Lupin Blue/White color scheme!

At 30,000 miles, the fork sliders failed and had to be replaced. I also replaced the rear shock and the ride is much more firm in a great way. Other than that, feels solid as a rock and has never left me stranded. Still, at six years the forks fell apart?

Value vs rivals 4 out of 5

If you can do the minor services and change your own tires, it’s as cheap as anything. If you have to use a dealer, it’s on the spendy side, but it has to be said that BMW dealerships offer superior service compared to almost any other brands in my experience.

Equipment 5 out of 5

You get a nice sporty feel with the standard seating: the ‘bars are a little forward and grips are not too close together, the ‘pegs are just towards sporty. I converted to handlebars with a taller screen for touring. I recommend the OEM panniers, they’re not that big, but have a thoughtful shelf on the bottom that holds the liner bags in place while fetching things. I installed a rack above the dash to hold my phone, otherwise I’d move the ill-placed GPS unit there.

Buying experience: I purchased from a dealer (two different ones from the same dealer) and had a great experience here in California at A&S Cycles in Sacramento. I bought the first one, a 2016 with 7,000 miles, used at $17,000 USD in 2017. I bought the second one, also a 2016 with 19,000 miles, in 2021 for $10,250 USD. They both came with panniers, the second one had a top case as well, and a Hex EZ Can as well as a few other touring things that came in handy. The best thing about buying a BMW is you can almost always count on it being taken care of, BMW owners don’t pop a lot of wheelies and do a lot of burnouts.

5 out of 5 The (almost) Holy Grail of touring motorcycles
19 April 2022 by Roscoe Skipper

Year: 2016

It’s a little vibey though not as much as many bikes, but it’s almost the Holy Grail: the bike that can comfortably take to wherever you want to travel then when you get there, it’s almost your first choice to scratch in the canyons.Definitely recommended.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

OEM brakes were a little grabby, but replacing with EBC and Galfer pads made a huge difference. Now the feel is light and progressive, with all the power one could want. The ESA is great, the bike always seems ready to do what you need it to do. Love the ‘normal’ suspension and the light weight, great for touring AND fun. And the ride makes you feel like a million bucks.

Engine 4 out of 5

Loved it until the 1250 came out, now I know it could be a scooch better in the midrange. Still, I wouldn’t give up my lupin blue/cream paint job!

Reliability & build quality 4 out of 5

I wish I could say they’re bulletproof, but at 30,000 miles, had to replace the rear shock and right after the fork sliders broke, and it was a tough part to source so the bike was in the shop for a few weeks. I really feel like BMWs as a whole, and not just their engines, should last longer.

Value vs rivals 4 out of 5

Most of the work of a minor service (Level 1) can be done at home, but best to leave the valve checks to a shop, mostly for the resale value when it’s time to sell.

Equipment 5 out of 5

BMW knows how to make a bike that lasts. As standard I’m sure it’s fine, but here in the States one rarely comes upon a less than fully decked out model. The heated grips are great, the luggage functional and tough. Needs a taller windscreen (Wunderlich) and bar risers or a handlebar conversion for long days. Prefer Pirelli Angel GTs on this bike.

Buying experience: My third one, all from dealers, two from the same one. $17,000 range when I got my first used one in 2016, got the latest one for $10,000 with 20,000 miles.

Find the bike totally reliable in starting in all kinds of weather. Very reassuring ride and the abs braking really help when filtering through London traffic and you encounter unobservant road users. My only issue is that the bike is keyless (Great) and the petrol tank cap is electronic. More than once I have had issues when pulling up at a petrol station and after switching off the bike and turning the ignition off to be able to open the petrol cap it does release.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

This is a great all round bike. Very assured when commuting to work and filtering through traffic. Has good torque and flexibility for a burn round the lanes. Very comfortable for me and the wife when two up. Manage a good two to three hour stint before stopping to fuel up or have a break.

Engine 5 out of 5

Great torque. Fuel efficiency and turn of speed.

Reliability & build quality 4 out of 5

Never misses a beat. Starts first time. The only issue is the metal quality, as my bike of 4 years old has rust all over it. I know this is caused by riding in all weathers and not thoroughly washing the bike after use, but after a long days work and an hours commuting back home you're not always is the frame of mind to do this. I would have hoped the bike would have been built for the weather conditions and uses of the UK.

Value vs rivals 4 out of 5

Using the main BMW dealership will not be cheap but they do a great job and assist in many ways. The mpg on the bike is great and has a good tank range.

Equipment 5 out of 5

Great to have heated grips. The abs has been a life saver and there is hardly any dipping of the forks when braking hard. It is nice to have a sports tourer that is shaft driven so no lubing of chains.

Buying experience: I bought from the dealer and managed to get a great deal, as it helped them with achieving their quoting that month and I saved over £1,500. Also had servicing deals thrown in as well. This might be due to being a customer of over 10 years./

The torques great, 3rd and 4th gear seem to be my favourite on twisty roads, the quick shifter is good after 2nd gear both up and down. Brakes are hardly needed as the engine braking is so good but when used it stops really quickly. Suspension settings are easily adjusted as are engine modes. It’s comfortable for me a 5’8” 12 stone 32 inside leg consumption has been 55 mpg plus. We use this 2 up a lot it’s a very capable touring machine. The bars can’t be adjusted and that’s rubbish for the money you pay, so a heavy tall guy gets the same bars as a small light guy!

Ive also fitted hand guards for winter riding. Wifey gets soaked when it rains, mainly on her back and inside of calves, mudguards are rubbish. The Back box when fitted acts as a mudguard Luggage is far to wide and could have been so much better. The scaffolding that’s holds the luggage shows the lack of care in design, it is after all sold as a sport tourer.

Engine 5 out of 5

I fairly certain this engine slows the rotation of the earth when I leave a stop light. Lots of grunt. Very easy power wheelies when you turn the nannies off.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

After two years and 12k miles the bike has not had a single reliability issue. As an Aircraft Mechanic I am amazed by the fit and finish of this motorcycle.

Value vs rivals 4 out of 5

It’s a BMW... regular service is a little pricey. BMW is exceptionally proud of their oil and the price reflects that. It is very easy to service this bike yourself and save some coin.

Equipment 5 out of 5

From the GPS to the heated grips, dynamic suspension, quick shifter pro, power outlet..this thing is loaded with stuff

Buying experience: Bought used with 200 miles off some sucker on e-bay... saved $5k. Very happy.

5 out of 5 Simply the best all rounder on the market

Its really hard to fault this bike, if you can forget the traditional image of Boxer engined machines, you will find them hard to beat.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Suspension is superb, easily adjustable at the flick of a switch. Brembos are flawless on the bike.

Engine 5 out of 5

Boxer engine works superbly in this chassis, power is just right for the bike. Forthcoming VVT version with more HP will only be a bonus.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

BMW quality is top drawer, RS1200RS is a fine example. No reliability issues to date.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

BMW are amongst the highest service labour rates in the bike world, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Pound for pound, bike itself is excellent value for what you are actually getting.

Equipment 5 out of 5

Is there a better equipped bike out there for the money?

Buying experience: BMW dealership experience can be patchy, some excellent, some very mediocre.

4 out of 5 LT to RS SPORT SE, EASY WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT 😜

Version: Sprite SE

Year: 2016

Annual servicing cost: £80

After 8 years on K1200LT THIS FEELS LIKE A MOPED (a very quick moped!) It's featherweight in comparison and unbelievably easy to ride. It really inspires confidence when cornering and braking is superb. Comfort is OK to good.... After the luxury of the LT this is still high praise. Gear shift assist is very smooth, keyless ride is great (except when someone rides off with them in his pocket). Gearbox is the customary BMW clunker at low speeds. All in all a great bike.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Superb all round. Brakes outstanding

Engine 5 out of 5

Pulls great throughout range. Quick shift very smooth at high revs.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

It's only 6 weeks old with 1200 miles on - so time will tell .......... My old LT was reliable until 6 yrs and 25,000 miles - then turned into a money pit for repairs.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Only service to date was 600 mile running in service at £80.00

Equipment 4 out of 5

ESA ABS CRUISE CONTROL. Ride mode. Should really come with sat nav unit. Fitted Givi Blade 47 top box, fits two Full Face helmets. The bm box is ridiculously small and expensive.

Buying experience: Coopers Sunderland. Traded in my 8 yr old LT against this. (Which I also bought new from them) Quality dealer

5 out of 5 Great 1-up eurpean tourer, fantastic on Alpine twisties, comfortable on M-ways
26 April 2016 by Tuco

Year: 2015

Annual servicing cost: £250

Great touring bike, with fantastic performance in terms of power and handling. does well on M-ways too, important to get you the twisties. Extras well worth the money, especially the Dynamic suspension and quick shifter.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

Good all rounder, not quite as comfortable as the K1600GT on M-ways, I needed an aftermarket screen, which made a huge difference. Fantastic on Alpine like roads. I use it for 1-up touring, with the overall bike size and available luggage space 2 would be a squeeze. Hard to beat R1200RT or K1600GT for 2-up.

Engine 5 out of 5

Great power, quick shifter makes for even quicker corner entry/exits and over-takes.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

No problems so far. Runs well in hot climates had it up to 42C in cities and no issues. Can't say the same for my K1600GT.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Annual servicing cost (euros) reasonable, plus tyre wear not bad ~7000km/set.

Equipment 5 out of 5

Went for everything except the Alarm, immobiliser fitted as standard. Also allows extra room under pillion seat. Fitted HID lights, along with the driving/fog lights excellent visibility on the road, plus, on the rare occasions good visibility at night. Recommend Givi or similar top box, BMW top box way too small and expensive.

Buying experience: Bought from main Dealer. I thought the initial launch price, with all extras, was very good. Price increases since then :-(

Version: R1200RS SE

Year: 2015

Annual servicing cost: £200

I had the R1200GS (new version) but the GS was lost in a sea of bikes. The R1200RS gets loads of admirers. Love everything about the new bike. You are inclined to push it on faster than the GS, so don't expect the same MPG. Being a BMW, it has a very high quality finish. I would highly recommend this bike.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Ride quality is great. The RS is more suitable to motorways/good road surfaces etc. The suspension is a tad firm for back roads, having changed from the GS. The missus much prefers the new bike.

Engine 5 out of 5

Again, the engine is supposed to be same as the GS, but I find that the new engine is far smoother. The slipper clutch is brilliant

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

No problems with Quality and reliability.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

The GS was giving 60 MPG overall. The RS is returning 57 MPG. Very good consumption

Equipment 5 out of 5

More than enough equipment on the R1200RS SE

Buying experience: Bought direct from BMW - no issues here. Prices are non-negotiable

Gearbox a bit "clunky" going into first when engine at operating temp. No other issues.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Had my first BMW in 1980, (R100CS), loved that one and love this one. Traded in a GS and love the lower COG, makes cornering a more enjoyable experience, for me. Brembos are superb and really progressive.

Engine 5 out of 5

My last boxer was the air/oil cooled GS, the LC has just so much more usable power.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

Only had it 3 months, so don't expect it to fall apart just yet. Quality: Outstanding.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

£190 for initial service, (600 miles). Met expectations

Equipment 5 out of 5

I have the SE, so can't think of anything i would like to add to it.

Buying experience: Chester motorad made the trade in and buying experience seamless and hassle free. Nothing was too much trouble. I had multiple test rides on the new GS, the XR and on the RS, i also had more test rides on the RS after ordering, "just to make sure" Chester Motored staff indulged me happily. I know from where i am buying my next bike.

After three yearson a sports bike and looking for something a little more comfortable for pillion riding and predominantly commuting into central London, I was overwhelmed by this bike. It's light and nimble in traffic, ok it's a bit wide for filtering sometimes, but still a great commuter bike. On the open roads though, the handling is sublime.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

The electronics on the suspension are excellent and the brakes, well they are Brembos!

Engine 5 out of 5

Soooooo much torque, it will pull in any gear.

Reliability & build quality 4 out of 5

Only had it two weeks, just had first service done, the quality is good, but it's a BMW. I certainly don't envisage any reliability issues.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

600 mile service done, not too painful.

Equipment 5 out of 5

Being the SE Sport model, it has all the bells and whistles.

Buying experience: Bahnstormer Alton can't fault them, shocked that they were even able to cut a good deal.
