A guide to cleaning your motorcycle chain including tips and the best cleaners

Looking after your motorcycle chain is a really important chore, after all it is the part of your bike that runs the power to your rear wheel unless you own a belt or shaft-driven motorcycle. So chain cleaners and chain lubrication should be a part of motorcycle care routine, the same way that cleaning your bike is essential to keeping it not only looking good but working properly as well.

But there are more reasons to keep your chain clean than just looking good. The dirtier it is, with more and more foreign material and road grime stuck to it, the higher the wear – to not only the chain itself but both drive sprockets as well.

Why do I need to clean my chain?

In the very worst-case scenario, the chain can break, leaving you stranded at the roadside or even causing an accident or injury. It’s not particularly common but I have had it happen to me before, whether due to my slack cleaning schedule or some other reason, it’s a real pain when you are left with a bike with no drive needing to either get recovered or push it home.

If a chain wears and the tension becomes too loose, then it’s possible it can get jump off and end up stuck around a wheel sprocket, which is not a good situation to find yourself in.

So, keep the chain clean. Ideally, clean it once a month if you’re using the bike frequently. This will get rid of all the old lubricant and the grubbiness that inevitably sticks to it, leaving you with a nice clean surface to apply a coat of new lubrication. This simple care routine will help to lengthen the lifespan of your chain, sprocket and motorcycle in general.

What is a chain cleaner and how do you use it?

A chain cleaner – as is suggested in the name – is a product that is designed to clean the drive chain on your motorcycle. It is a high powered degreaser that is formulated to break through the grime and old lube that builds up from regular use. Each manufacturer will have it’s own instructions on the can or bottle but they usually require you to apply fairly liberally while spinning the rear wheel to access the entire length of the chain.

Motorcycle chain being scrubbed with a chain brush

The easiest way to do this is to pop the bike onto it’s centre stand, if it has one, or raise the rear wheel using a paddock stand. This allows you to spin the rear wheel freely to run the chain round , allowing you to easily clean the entire length. It’s probably a good idea to protect the ground underneath your bike with some old cardboard, or something similar, to catch the wet dirty excess that will run off the chain during cleaning.

Some cleaners will then require you to use a chain cleaning brush or a cloth to wipe off excess cleaning fluid and the loosened grime, others may instruct you to rinse with water.

"There have been three occasions in my life when I've watched bikes gracefully keel over and land like beached whales on their sides thanks to collapsing paddock stands."Thankfully, I'm confident it won't happen with a front and rear motorcycle paddock stand from Oxford. The long handle section gives good leverage to hoik even the heaviest bikes off terra firma, and once lifted, the bike feels rock-solid and secure.

"Crucially, they also use double wheels per arm, ensuring there's less torsional twist when the mass of your bike is bearing down on them. Great value for money."

A chain brush is specifically designed with bristles in three directions to allow you to clean around the chain in one movement, making life a little easier. In terms of what cloth to use, a microfibre is perfect as you don’t want to leave lint or paper towel pieces behind when wiping the chain.

Not withstanding the dubious name, there is little not to like about this two-brush set of chain-cleaning products. Admittedly they are aimed at motorcyclists and cyclists alike and the long, thin end of the brush is intended for cycle rear-gearset cassettes but you'll find something useful to use them for on a motorcycle. The three-sided end is perfect for cleaning drivechains ready for re-lubricating and protecting against the elements.

  • Simple yet effective
  • Handy double pack
  • Good value

Cons

  • Highly dodgy name

What to look for in a chain cleaner

In reality most chain cleaners are pretty similar, there probably isn’t going to be one that is head and shoulders above the rest. It’s going to come down to any brand loyalty that you may have, which type of application you like, be it aerosol spray or a hand pump spray and how much you are willing to spend.

Some will be more environmentally friendly than others, although most are not due to the strength of chemicals required. Others also stand out from the crowd by applying a scent to the product.

chain cleaning before and after

Coupled with this is whether they are solvent or water-based – if the latter, they can be rinsed off easily but the former may need multiple applications of the same product to achieve a good result – expensive and potentially harmful.

Also, the way in which they work is important; some are designed to be sprayed on and left while others require additional agitation. In fact, even the spray-on versions can benefit from some physical help on particularly dirty chains.

The best chain cleaners that we have tried

These chain cleaners have been tested by MCN staff on our fleet and personal bikes. They have been rated on their quality and value to determine how well they clean the chain and whether they are good value for the price.

"I've used this and it's easy to apply with the precision nozzle. It cleans impressively well with minimal scrubbing effort and wiped cleaner off with a cloth, and it smells good too, which is always a bonus. It's safe to use on any surface on the bike, and is safe for the O, X and Z rings and being biodegradable you have piece of mind that it's less harmful than some others. A pretty good option considering it is often available for less than a tenner"

"Keeping a clean and well-maintained chain is an eternal struggle, and as I cover fairly substantial miles, I generally like to stick with a chain cleaner that I know works because it saves me time in the long run. Just recently I happened to tried out Silverback’s Maxilla and as a result have a new addition to my shelf of go-to products. "

"This biodegradable formula comes in a generously sized bottle with a convenient thumb action spray head, making it very easy to apply. I wet the chain thoroughly through one rotation, then out of habit do a lighter coat for luck. Grime starts dripping off almost immediately, although it works best if you leave it for the prescribed two minutes before giving it a going over with a dedicated chain brush. Rinse off with water, and the job’s a good un, leaving the chain ready for a new dose of lube. At £14.99 for 1 litre, it’s great value for money and is effective as a general degreaser on all kinds of jobs."

From the same company that devised the chain tensioning tool, this chain cleaner has been formulated to get rid of dirt, grease and grime and leave the chain ready for fresh lubricant.

"The PrimeShine Cleaner’s nozzle puts out a powerful spray, which really helps to dislodge the dirt. I give it a liberal squirt along the lower run of the chain whilst spinning the rear wheel and by the time the chain’s travelled through one complete cycle most of the filth has gone - even when it’s been caked with winter road gunk. A quick wipe with a rag removes the excess and the remainder evaporates without a trace in a few minutes. It makes a great shed shelf companion to Tru-Tension's BananaSlip Chain Lube."

"This chain cleaner is as good as a tenner to buy for 100ml, which is pretty good value. It has a precision nozzle on the aerosol can, making it easy to angle right where you need it and the power it comes out with shift a lot of the dirt straight away. With minimal scrubbing and a quick wipe with the cloth, the chain comes up nice and shiny. Evaporating quickly I was able to immediately apply the lube. It's also quite handy that it a brake and chain cleaner so that means one less bottle on the shelf."

"This chain cleaner comes in an aerosol spray bottle, much like the others. It has a precision spray nozzle so you can accurately attack the chain dirt, and the pressure that it comes out with is enough to dislodge the worst of the grime. The cleaning power is pretty impressive, having used this on my fairly neglected chain, it cut through the black gunk with ease and required hardly any scrubbing. Once the excess was wiped away with a cloth, a shiny gold chain was left behind, ready to be lubed up for my next ride. It's safe to be used on O, Z and X ring chain types. Not as cheap as some others but often available for around £10 to £12 pounds online, it really packs a punch so I don't think you would get through a can as quickly as some other less powerful cleaners."

"I like to have a clean chain but hate doing the job, so I really want something that's going to
cut through the crap quickly and restore my chain to its grime-free, shiny best with as little effort on my part as is humanly possible. Oxford's Mint range is universally good stuff and the chain cleaner works exactly as I want it to. A generous spray while rotating the rear wheel, a quick scrub with a toothbrush and a brief wipe with a cloth is all it takes to make the links look factory-fresh once again. It’s suitable for O, Z and X ring chains, too. It’s easy to use and lasts extremely well
but is also environmentally- friendly, no animal testing. It smells quite nice, too."

Other chain cleaners we are still to test

Some other chain cleaners that may be worth considering, that we have not yet had a chance to test, but we intend to soon.

Forming part of the famous company's Specialist Motorbike range, this chain cleaner is good for O, X and Z-ring chains and cuts through all forms of dirt, including mud, grease, old lubricant and road grime.

Just spray it on and either brush it or let it soak in, then a quick blast off again. It helps protect the chain afterwards though the company also recommends treatment with a chain lube too. It took a RIDE Recommended award in the same product test.

Designed for road and off-road machines, this cleaner from Motul removes encrusted dirt and dust, sand, old lubricant and any other forms of debris. It is good for all types of chain, O, X and Z-ring and it evaporates quickly.

You spray on and leave it to do its work, unless the chain is particularly filthy and you need to brush. It’s then ready for lubricating until its next clean.

The most expensive here but it comes in a very handy spray bottle with an accurate probe, so you shouldn't waste too much. It will clean both the chain and drive components as well as the brake system, leaving no oily residue and is good for use on all types of chain.

You spray on, allow it to soak in and do its work, agitate with a brush or cloth for stubborn dirt then let it dry and apply your lubricant.

While not specifically a chain cleaner, this universal parts cleaner from XCP is a solvent-based product that is sprayed on and allowed time to dwell before either agitating with a brush for very dirty chains or wiped off to leave a lube-ready chain behind.

There is no mention of using it on wheels or frames, though some reviewers say it works well – make your own judgement on that.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use chain cleaner or can I use petrol?

Never be tempted to clean a chain with anything other than proper chain cleaner; something harsher, like petrol, can eat into the seals that ensure oil is maintained within each link and protects from within and you can actually make things much worse. Just use a product designed for the task and you’ll be fine.

I don’t have a paddock stand or centre stand, how do I clean my chain?

Using a paddock stand or lift of some sort is definitely easier and can be useful for several other motorbike related chores but you can clean and maintain your chain without one. The simplest way to do it alone is to clean the chain in sections, rolling the bike forward a short distance each time to access more of the chain, until you have done a full chain rotation. Similarly if you have a helper to hand, one person can roll the bike while the other follows with the clearer and a cloth or brush.

How often should I be cleaning my chain?

Ideally, you should clean and re lubricate your motorcycle chain every week to keep it in tip top condition. If you don’t ride your bike very often then this could potentially be stretched out a little, but don’ leave your chain dirty for long as it will affect the health of your chain and your motorcycle.

Our scores explained

When we review a product, we award it a score out of five. In the ratings tab of a given product, you may also find more specific scores for the different aspects of a product’s performance to help you make an informed decision. Here’s a guide to what each number score means:

  • 1 star – Poor performance in this category or overall. A product with a single star rating has fallen below the expected standard and should be avoided.
  • 2 stars – Basic performance in this area or overall. A product with a two-star rating has managed to perform to a barely acceptable level and there is room for improvement.
  • 3 stars – An average performance in this area or overall. A product with a three-star rating has achieved a basic level of performance and is deemed adequate.
  • 4 stars – A product has performed over and above the accepted averaged in this category or overall. A product with a four-star rating has surpassed expectation and delivered in a particularly impressive way.
  • 5 stars – A product has performed at the highest possible level in a particular category or overall. A product with a five-star rating has delivered to the highest possible level, impressing the tester with its performance. We would happily spend our own money on it.
