Designed as a 1:5 scale version of the 209bhp superbike, the little racer is nearly half a metre long, built from over 1900 individual parts and has astonishing levels of detail.

I’ve been building LEGO sets in one form for another for over 40 years, from the original Space series through to the more recent Creator releases, such as the Harley-Davidson Fat Boy, but the Technic BMW M1000RR has to be one of the most challenging I’ve undertaken – in a good way.

At 1,920 pieces (give or take) it gave me hours of pleasure on the long winter nights when a spirited ride on my own bike wouldn’t have been an option. I’m a ‘one bag per session’ kind of builder, just so I can stretch it out as long as possible, but in this case I was splitting each of the five bags over a day or two, so all in it took an hour(ish) a day for ten days. From a buildability perspective, that’s good value for money.

The individual components were an absolute joy as they came to life, such as the four cylinder engine block with working pistons and the three-speed (plus neutral!) gearbox. There were a few times I had to break down and rebuild certain aspects, but that was down to me rather than Lego’s gorgeous 383-page pictorial instruction book, which in itself is a thing of loveliness to look at.

As a 1:5 model the M1000RR is 460mm long and 260mm tall (with the paddock stand) and is one of the biggest and most striking in my display cabinet. Lego have a habit of ‘retiring products’ from time to time, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this iconic BMW became a collectible soon – best snap one up before it’s double the price on eBay!
