Bang for your bike buck! Amazon's Black Friday sale will run from Nov 21 - Dec 2 in 2024

Amazon have announced that their 2024 Black Friday sale event will run from Thursday, November 21 all the way through to Monday, November 2. This means that the week-and-a-half-long deals event will include Cyber Monday this year.

Amazon may not be the first retailer you think of for bike kit but we often see Black Friday deals on everything from disc locks and bike cleaner to big ticket items like sat navs and Bluetooth intercoms.

Black Friday is an American invention resulting from the huge peak in shopping seen on the Friday after Thanks Giving (a bank holiday in the states) and has since become a shopping staple for lots of brands.

Even if not all retailers use the Black Friday label anymore (although many still do) most will have a pre-Christmas sales event to kick their festive period off with a bang. We’ll be covering those too, to ensure bikers get the best bang for their festive buck.

Amazon products we’ve seen discounted before

Over the years, we’ve noticed certain products cropping up in Amazon sales again and again – and it would be a safe bet to assume that at least some of them are on offer again.

“You’ve probably not heard of Reapp – and nor had we until recently – but the deals on their disc locks are hard to ignore, especially in Amazon sale events.

“At full price, the Reapp costs £32.99 and for that money you’d probably go for a brand you’ve heard of like Oxford who have alarmed disc locks in this price range.

“But when it’s on offer at Amazon for as little as £23.99, it can look very tempting. So tempting, in fact, that we bought one.

“The first thing you notice as you take the lock out of the packaging is that it is incredibly light. The whole top casing is made of thin cast metal and is pretty much hollow apart from the alarm circuitry. It doesn’t fill you with confidence.

“The bottom section is made from solid metal but has such a cheap and scratchy finish that I initially thought it was made of plastic.

“It’s not all bad, though, as the alarm sound is genuinely ear-splitting. It’s high-pitched and very loud and would definitely demand attention if someone was trying to steal your bike.

“If you have a good-quality disc lock already without an alarm then the Reapp would make a good addition to your security armoury and it’s definitely better than nothing at all but if you have the budget there are better-quality options out there.”
If you want a discrete outdoor camera to monitor what's going on before thieves get into your garage, then this Blink camera from Amazon will do just that. It's totally wireless, using battery power and runs day or night.

Like the indoor version, you can get motion detection alerts to your phone and two-way audio lets you make your presence and monitoring known. It’s easy to set up and use and gets great reviews online.

MCN says: “If you’re looking for an affordable, discreet and simple way to keep an eye on your garage, Amazon’s Blink is a blinking good deal.”

"This marvellous pink fluid is used by plenty of the MCN team on their own bikes and is one I frequently return to myself. If you’ve not had the pleasure, Muc-Off Nano Tech is a fully biodegradable, water-based cleaner with a distinctive sweet scent and lurid pink colour.

"You spray it on a wet bike and leave it to do its thing before agitating trouble spots with a brush and rinsing off and I’m always amazed at just how much dirt it fetches off with minimal effort.

"There’s usually a deal to be had somewhere on it, too, so you can stock up if you’ve got space to store it (or buy the concentrated version if you haven’t). Top tip, the Bike Cleaner marketed to cyclists is exactly the same formula in different packaging so you can take advantage of any deals you spot on that, too."

Pros

  • Biodegradable so no need to worry about rinsing it onto your driveway
  • Smells nice - not a crucial feature but nice to have all the same

Cons

  • Struggles with seriously stubborn lube fling or tar

"These bike covers from little-known American brand Favoto often drop to silly prices in Amazon sale events and so we thought we’d get hold of one to see if it’s any good. I got the XXL (245cm) option and it’s the right size for the Triumph Scrambler 400X I’m currently testing.

"I was immediately impressed by the front and rear clips to fix it over the bike as I’ve never got on with the under the belly fasteners you get on many covers. It seems really robust and has weathered a few blustery storms without tearing so far, plus you get a UV reflective layer for sun protection.

"On the flipside, some customer reviews on Amazon say it’s shredded in bad weather. That hasn’t been my experience despite the cover being used through some nasty storms but the bike lives in a sheltered location behind a wall.

"At full price I’d say it’s worth buying, but in Amazon sales these sometimes drop under a tenner!"

Pros

  • Incredible value, especially in sales events
  • Robust fabric and strong seams
  • UV-resistant layer under the waterproof membrane
  • Front and rear fitment clips
  • Holes for feeding through a modest security chain

Cons

  • A bit shapeless and baggy in places
  • Some customer reviews claim it shredded in severe weather (not my experience)
  • Security chain holes aren’t big enough for big chains

"The Zumo’s serious capability is both its strength and its weakness. It can do so much, so you really need to study its functionality before you can even begin to scratch the surface of its possibilities.

"If you are a dedicated sat-nav fan and you enjoy the technology as much as you enjoy the riding, then this is definitely for you. If you like planning big trips that cover multiple days and different surfaces, then it is right up your green-lane."
