I’ve been a fan of HJC’s motorcycle helmets for years and was keen to try the latest flip-front offering. I’m happy to say, I’ve not been disappointed with the quality, comfort and fit of the RPHA 91. It’s been great from the off and is my go-to helmet.

I like the styling, design and ease of use. Vents are well placed and offer enough draught to be comfortable even on the warmest day. Visor aperture is large and the visor is easy to open/close with the larger than average tab.

Comfort

I headed out on a 1600 mile round trip for the first wear of this lid, that is the confidence I had in the brand and I wasn’t disappointed. Padding is soft and plush, it shows no signs of wear plus it’s retained the new helmet smell, even after sweating, getting stuck in torrential rain and riding for ten hours a day.

Vent on the HJC RPHA 91 helmet

One thing I have learnt in recent times, is that I have to wear a medium lid, previous evolutions of HJC helmets were always a small but since the change to ECE22.06 lids seem a little smaller. One slight criticism at 1700g it is heavier than most lids I’ve worn of late but the weight doesn’t make it uncomfortable.

Practicality

Flip-front lids are great for touring, and I’ve worn loads over the year. This has all the practical elements that I’ve come to expect.

The drop-down sun-visor is easy to operate, via a lever on the left underside of the helmet and the visor is sufficiently tinted to be of use. There’s a Pinlock anti-fog insert, which is essential for year-round riding.

The clear visor is quick release and it’s incredibly easy to open, even with gloved hands, as there’s a large tab to grab hold of. Vents are easy to operate and provide sufficient air to keep cool on the hottest of days.

If you are a glasses wearer, there’s grooves to accommodate the arms and it also comes ready to fit an intercom, which can be purchased separately.

Looks

I like the stylish graphic design but if you’re more suited to more conservative designs, there’s plenty to choose from. The placement of vents and spoilers give it a sport feel, where quite often flip-front lids can look dull, this one doesn’t.

Quality

HJC helmets come in various price brackets and the RPHA91 is towards the more expensive end of the price range. You get what you pay for, it’s comfortable, top quality and comes with a 5-year warranty, should there be any issues.

Protection

Rated to the latest ECE22.06 standard, it meets with the highest protection standards.

Value

At close to £500, it’s pricey but in my opinion, it’s worth the investment, as it’s comfortable, has lots of quality touches and can you put a price on safety?

Other Flip-Front Helmets to consider

Tried and tested by Justin Hayzelden - A class leading flip up lid, the Shoei Neotec 3 has exceptional comfort, a customisable fit, and is one of the quietest lids Justin's ever owned. Everything about it gives a premium feel, even if it is a bit on the heavy side.

Tried and tested by Adam Binnie - Great build quality, fit, and comfort, without the fishbowl aesthetic. The fact it’s a flip front is almost secondary – this is a great helmet in its own right.

Tried and tested by Jim Blackstock - A great all rounder, even if it is only ECE 22.05 certified, the Shark EVO GT offers a flip-front helmet with few compromises. Its over-the-top flipping design does mostly give you the best of both full-face and open-face designs, while being P/J certified, retaining good ergonomics, and excellent field of vision.
