Layering with Klim | Get this right and you’ll be ready for any weather on your motorbike

Paid partnership with Klim

Staying comfortable on your motorbike in all weathers is about more than your enjoyment. It can mean you can ride further, stop less often (if you want to) and will actually keep you safer, too.

Feeling comfortable is a passive safety feature of your kit. The thinking goes that if you’re not wasting brain power on being cold or wet or too hot or shuffling around on a chafed bum, then you are more likely to spot that car changing lane without indicating or a lorry driver looking the wrong way on a tricky junction.

One of the best ways to ensure your comfort in any conditions is layering. This means more than just adding more items of clothing the colder it gets – these days there are technical garments with specific jobs such as moisture wicking base layers, breathable waterproof membranes and insulating mid-layers.

Layering a Klim base layer under a jacket

The best place to start is with a base layer. There are three main types these days, some keep you warm, some keep you cool and some are designed to do both and be worn year-round.

This is a year-round base layer made from the natural material that will be well-known to skiers and ramblers. Merino Wool base layers provide excellent moisture management, while also helping the body regulate temperature in both warm and cool conditions – as long as these temperatures don't get too extreme. In addition to the high level of wearing comfort, the Merino wool reduces odour formation, which is particularly appreciated on long tours.

If it’s likely to get really hot on your ride, the Minus 1.0 is a better option that Merino wool.  It uses an effective, chemical-free cooling principle (cold evaporation) and a well-functioning moisture management system to keep you cool and comfortable. As soon as the body releases moisture, the “Minus 1.0” starts to cool. When dry, the fabric acts like a normal base layer, too.

The Aggressor model above also comes in these three thermal variants. While the “1.0” primarily dissipates moisture, the “2.0” offers additional thermal insulation, which is recommended in cooler and cold seasons. With its zone-specific insulation – thinner insulating layers are used around the armpits – the “3.0” combines extreme protection against the cold with maximum wearing comfort.

While base layers are a step in the right direction, once conditions start to get very cold you’ll need to step up your game and consider a mid-layer. These are worn immediately under your outer jacket and add wind-stopping and thermal bulk to your layering arrangement.

At the lighter end, these can be fleecy garments and at the heavier end they are down jackets that can be worn in their own right off the bike.

The Maverick down jacket is light and windproof, and uses goose down—inserted at high pressure for consistent thermal insulation – to keep you warm in any situation. The seamless design of the down chambers reduces the down leakage commonly experienced in other jackets to a minimum, and the high-quality nylon material effortlessly slips under any motorcycle jacket.

The Alloy jacket is the latest addition to the KLIM Mid-Layer range. It’s a light fleece jacket that helps provide thermal comfort underneath a motorcycle jacket in moderate temperatures. It offers impressive mobility, excellent thermal insulation, and outstanding moisture-wicking capabilities.

The Inferno jacket and pant have been among the most popular mid-layers in the KLIM range for many years. That is because they are so comfortable to wear in a wide range of applications. Both can be used either as a mid-layer or as leisure garments. Complementing the Inferno duo is the new jogger pant, which offers even more comfort than its counterparts.

The best thing about layering is that you can adapt what you are wearing throughout the day or from day-to-day when the conditions change. Pop a mid-layer in for the chilly morning route and then take it back out again at lunch once the temperature has risen.

Or ride all day in the summer sun wearing a moisture wicking Aggressor “Minus 1.0” and then add an Alloy mid-layer for the last stretch home as the sun goes down and the mercury drops.
