After years of using plastic and nylon camping tents on my adventures, I decided to switch things up this year with the Wingman of the Road Goose tent, an all-in-one motorcycle camping system.

If you’re looking for a super portable and lightweight camping option for your touring packing list, conventional hiking gear might be more suitable. However, with an adventure motorcycle to carry your luggage, why not opt for a more luxurious camping experience?

Design and Setup

The Goose is a single-person canvas tunnel tent that includes a sleeping bag and mat, all of which roll up into a compact pack that securely mounts to your motorcycle with thick straps. When folded, the pack is about the size of a top box, but when unrolled, you’ll be surprised at how much is packed into this system.

The real beauty of this setup lies in its efficiency—you can go from parking your motorcycle to having the tent fully set up and pitched in under five minutes! This quick setup is made possible by a simple structure supported by one rigid backbone pole and two smaller, flexed, corded poles. The tent pegs and poles are stored in a reinforced PVC pole pouch within the roll. The mat, made of dense foam, eliminates the need to spend time and energy inflating a mattress, and the sleeping bag is also included in the roll.

This fast setup time means that after a long day’s ride with your friends, you can pitch your tent, crack open a beer, and watch as your fellow riders struggle with their more complex setups.

How comfortable is The Goose tent to sleep in?

The interior of the Goose tent is not the most spacious, so larger riders might find it a bit tight. However, at 5’8″, I found there was still plenty of room to store my valuables at the end of the tent. If you need more space, the larger “Toucan” model offers a roomier alternative.

What really impressed me was the tent’s versatility in adapting to changing weather conditions. Both sides of the tent have zippers, allowing you to completely fold them up on warm summer days to take in your surroundings. As the chilly night sets in, you can close up all the doors and extra ventilation slots, with the thick canvas keeping you warm and blocking out early morning light for a solid night’s sleep.

While the tent isn’t tall enough to sit up in, it does feature a porch flap that can be attached to your bike, providing space to store your gear or prepare breakfast in the morning.

Does the Wingman of The Road Goose Tent look good?

The Goose tent has an authentic and discreet look that blends naturally into its surroundings, making it far more appropriate than some plastic options, like the LoneRider motorcycle tent, which can look out of place in nature. I also love the military-style appearance when the pack is rolled up—it looks great on the back of the bike.

What’s the quality of The Goose tent like?

The canvas construction makes the tent extremely durable, so you don’t have to be overly careful when feeding the poles through. After several adventures, the tent has shown no signs of wear, and all the zippers still function like new.

What weather protection does The Goose tent provide?

The Goose tent offers excellent protection from the elements and is 100% waterproof, even in storms. Its low profile minimizes the impact of wind, making it a safe and secure place to rest at night.

Is the Wingman of the Road Goose tent good value?

The Goose model is priced at £330, which is reasonable considering it includes both a sleeping mat and bag, eliminating the need for additional purchases. The closest rival, the popular LoneRider MotoTent, offers the ability to store your bike inside the tent—a nice feature, but I prefer the quick setup time of the Goose, which allows me to spend more time on the road exploring.

"Being able to keep your bike undercover gives great peace of mind, and it’s also rather reassuring to make out its silhouette in the next ‘room’ in the middle of a moonlit night. Should you need to make any running repairs it makes an effective temporary garage with shelter from the elements and enough elbow room for intense spannering. It can be opened up on all three sides, so no need for tricky manoeuvring in or out."

"yes, it’s great to be able to get dressed standing up or park your bike inside, but there’s an awful lot of material to catch the wind and with only four guy lines it’s difficult to keep the structure taught. Ours actually caught a gust with two of the main doors open and ripped off a peg loop.
The MotoTent offers a touch of luxury that could prove vital if you’re sick on the road or need to fix a broken bike, but it does take up valuable real estate which could leave you unprepared for something else. For my money, I’d pack smaller and take more."
