The Honda Pan European ST1300 is as accomplished a touring motorbike as you can buy.

It does everything you ask of it and more. Smooth, comfortable, fast, powerful and well-built – the Honda Pan European ST1300 should be near the top of anyone’s list whether they’re in the market for a mile-munching tourer or a classy commuter. Superb.

The ST 1300 replaced the similarly impressive Honda ST1100 Pan European which had a production run lasting all the way from 1989 to 2001. Due to their impressive mix of comfort, performance, luggage capacity and practicality, Pan European models have often been used as police, ambulance and blood bikes over the years.

If you can get your hands on a low-mileage used model (there are still some around) it can offer an economical alternative to a modern mile-muncher for long-distance road trips or two-up touring duties.

It's for these reasons this bike also made it into our expert guide to used sports tourers.

With its low seat and easy manners the Honda Pan European is a pleasure to steer, in fact you’ll wonder where all that ground clearance went the first time your pegs grind out. The seat is initially too firm, but after 6-7000 miles it begins to yield. A bit.

The brakes are excellent, the balance is near-perfect and even two-up on the Honda Pan European you’ll barely notice the difference.

The Honda ST1300 Pan European’s DOHC V4 is the last of the great Honda V4s – and with its trademark smooth, turbine-like power, there’s no mistaking it for anything else. Any gear, any time the Honda Pan European is ready for action with no fuss, just effortless delivery. It’s not exactly exciting, but, boy, is the Honda Pan European competent.

Some early Honda Pan Europeans ST1300 experienced some corrosion problems, but these seem to have been sorted on post-’04 machines. Honda ST1300 Pan European owners are usually experienced, responsible types which, combined with the ultra-reliable V4 motor and its low-maintenance shaft drive, means they’re a very safe bet for trouble-free miles new or used.

Honda Pan European ST1300 problems

Honda Pan European: Police issues...

A coroner speaking at the inquest of a deceased police motorcyclist says that Honda Pan Europeans pose a “serious and continual” threat to lives.

Coroner Dr James Adeley said he intends to write to every chief constable in England and Wales warning them of the “catastrophic result” which can occur with the Honda motorbike.

The inquest in Lancaster heard PC Shreeve lost control of his vehicle after it began to shake violently while travelling at high speed. After Shreeve’s death the Pan European was tested with comprehensive safety checks and in one such test an examiner broke his leg and fractured both wrists after being thrown from the bike that got into an identical high speed weave.

There are still 450 Honda ST1300 Pan Europeans in operation with police forces across the country. The inquest was told the problems affected only police motorcycles which have been specially fitted with heavy emergency and communications equipment, which altered the centre of gravity. The ST1300 was released in the UK in March 2002 and the police model was delivered in November 2002.

By January 2003 officers had reported experiencing the problem.A Honda spokeswoman said: "At this time our thoughts are with Mrs Shreeve and the family of Pc David Shreeve. Honda (UK) has had a strong working relationship with the majority of the police forces across the UK for more than 15 years.

"We have co-operated fully with the investigation into the accident. We have also worked closely with Merseyside Police and other police forces.

"For Honda the safety of our riders is paramount. We will continue to liaise with the police in light of the coroner's verdict."

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We welcome the verdict of the coroner, which hopefully will ensure the safety of police motorcyclists across the country. Merseyside Police withdrew these bikes immediately after the accident. Given that the coroner has described the vehicles as posing a serious and continued threat to the health and life of officers using the motorcycles in excess of 80mph, we would hope other chief constables would follow the lead set by Merseyside in November 2005."

Honda Pan Europeans depreciate very slowly, as there as so few secondhand examples on the market because owners hang onto their Pans. So although prices are high you will get more of your money back – and because of their reliability and desirability mileage is less of a factor on Honda Pan Europeans, too.

There is one very obvious modern alternative to a Honda Pan European, the BMW R1250RT, but many manufacturers have dropped this style of touring bike from their ranges.

If two-up touring is your aim, then a big, road-biased adventure bike like the Triumph Tiger 1200 GT might fit the bill instead. It's sporty enough to scratch the itch of most riders if you press on but can tackle massive miles in comfort with luggage and a passenger, too.

If you don't like adventure bike styling (it's not for everyone) then consider a Kawasaki H2 SX SE, a supercharged touring weapon with sportier styling than the Pan European but every bit as much touring capability.

This Honda Pan European loves covering big miles

Motorway riding is just great she eats the miles with ease but then its also great around the A roads great all round bike

Engine 5 out of 5

The engine is perfect and the engine tone reminds me of a turbine noise. Power is steady no real dramas

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

I had to replace the rear shock as it bottomed out a lot even after preload adjustment . I opted for a Nitron 1 replacement shock and what a difference. I have just ordered new down pipes [Stainless Steel] as they were very rusty from the joints. No other issues except service items

Not had a Major service as yet so cant comment.

The screen is excellent, not changed the tyres yet so would be open to suggestions

Buying experience: I bought this bike private from an AA Person. I paid £4000 for it and think it was well worth every penny so far.

5 out of 5 Aberdeen to London test ride!
08 July 2024 by Oliver Quartly

Year: 2015

Every morning, rain or shine, I straddle my trusty motorcycle—a faithful companion in the bustling streets of London. You see, I needed a bike that ticked all the right boxes: affordability, low insurance costs, reliability, and a built-in anti-theft system (because, let’s face it, London isn’t exactly known for its bike-friendly crime rates). Now, picture this: I’m a towering 6ft 2, tipping the scales at 120kg. Quite the contrast from my previous ride—a dainty 50cc Vespa.. But hey, life’s about growth, right? So, off I went to Aberdeen, where destiny awaited in the form of my new bike. The test ride home was an adventure in itself. I carved through the Scottish Highlands, conquering the highest road in the UK, breezed through Edinburgh, danced with the Lake District’s misty hills, and waltzed across the Yorkshire moors. The bike? Unfazed. Not a single hiccup. It even shrugged off snowflakes like a seasoned mountaineer.Back in London, it proved its mettle. Sun, rain, wind—heck, even the occasional hailstorm—it handled them all with grace. Manoeuvring through traffic became second nature. If there is a gap, my bike slipes through like a sly fox. And let’s be honest, if your Pan can’t fit into those gaps, you should not be even trying on any bike! Now, here’s the twist: my bike isn’t a speed demon. It’s not one of those Super Sports beasts that scream to 14rpm. No, it’s a different breed altogether—a grand tourer. Think of it as the James Bond of motorcycles: sleek, sophisticated, and built for long-haul romance. When the weekend calls, I escape the city’s chaos and head to the Cotswolds. Lanes wind through green hills, and my bike purrs contentedly. Sports? Sure, it can sprint but its not a Fireblade! And adventure sports bikes? Well, they’re like the SUVs of the motorcycle world—flashy, but do they really need all that bulk? My bike? It’s the Cary Grant of two-wheelers—classy, timeless, and utterly charming. So there you have it: my London love affair with a bike that’s more than just metal and rubber. It’s freedom, it’s therapy, and it’s the wind in my hair as I chase sunsets beyond the city limits.

Old skool but not outdone. Heavy by modern standards but stable and well balanced. Excellent ergos for taller heavier riders. Front end a little vague when tipping in, but holds line perfectly and experienced riders can have fun. Low maintenance, first class fit and finish and surprisingly agile on move. I take Neeves recommendations seriously and have owned most 90s and mid 2000 bikes he awarded 5 stars to. I really like the build quality. Have a ktm for fun but the ST can raise a smile. Took a tracer 9 out for a long spin recently. Jesus what has happened to build quality? My Versys 650 was a budget bike but much better screwed together. I'll always have an St 1300 in the stable. In 20 years time we will appreciate the work that went into these bikes and in 20 years time a lot of modern stuff will be kaput. Better than vfr 1200. Crosstourer might be more fun in twisties but not my style. The obsession with adventure styling is silly. Had a gs 1100 and 1150 and a few tiger 900s but they're awful on motorway and lack specific purpose. The pan does what it is meant to do. In style

I completed 4 rblr 1000mile/ 24hr challenges with which It never skipped a beat. It never once broke down.I looked up the registration earlier this year to see if it was still on the road. I sold it at 34k it is now on 91k unbelievable.

Year: 2006

Bought a used well cared for bike for a bargain price from a dealers. It was a bargain to me as it had a fully operational Autocom coms system and Honda heated grips fitted, and Honda top box. The paniers have OEM inner bags. It is a an absolutely stupendous motorcycle. It scratches around the back lanes or cruises the motorways and duals with equal ease. As technician trained bike mechanic I have added front auxillary lights ( without alterations to the body work ) and a rear fog light. Also a 12v power socket and twin USB into the left side fairing pocket. The additions look factory fitted so overall it looks ‘ unmolested’. My only gripe is the lack of adjustable front suspension which I have taken 5 years to find a set up that suits me. It is now compliant and less of a pogo stick that it felt like initially. This week from a tank brimmed full to going onto reserve light I have covered 266 miles with an indicated 44 miles left. That equates to 48 miles per gallon(29 litre tank divided by 4.54 litres = 6.38 gallons.) Considering the amount high speed distance journeys I do thats not bad for this old bus. I service it every January using genuine parts, which are not always in need of replacement anyway so each service comes in at £75 to £80 a time. This an incredible machine.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Furthest travelled without a break other than fuel is 375 miles with ease.

Engine 4 out of 5

Fuel injection initially quite annoying as it had a tendency to be ‘snatchy’ . But since taking advanced riding courses it hightlighted my poor use of the throttle which is no longer a problem and slow speed manouvering poses no issues with the power delivery.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

Never uses oil, or loses coolant, tyres needing replacing on average every 2 1/2 years. Look after your bike properly and it should as good as almost new years down the line.

Smooth, well fast enough for me and stable. Good storage in the panniers and top box. Only downside is the weight. Heavy is very apt. I wish it had a reverse 'gear'.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Linked brakes and ABS work well but no lean sensitive gubbins were ever available for the Pan. Never had it so I don't miss it. Perhaps one day when I'm half way around a bend and something unforeseen occurs I may wish that it was on the bike!

Valve clearances (16,000 m) checked by an independent service centre which greatly reduced the cost from the horrendous amount that a Honda main dealer would charge.

Battlax T32 tyres just fitted and so far so good. Too early to guess at how long they will last. Equipment wise, the bike is old school. Not missing anything a very average/steady road rider (me) would want.

5 out of 5 ST1300 still delights after all these years
03 June 2020 by Jupiter

Year: 2006

A dated big tourer some 18 years after model launch but no less competent for its age. Still a brilliant machine for covering serious miles with little effort !

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

I can't give it 5 as it is a little cramped for very tall people. I am 6ft 2 and my knees suffer a bit on long journey's (age related I fear). It's a fairly soft suspension set up with pre-load adjustment on the rear as standard. Brakes good but don't bother saving small amounts on rubbish pads, I find oe pads work best if a tad pricey....... but then how often do they really need changing unless you ride "on the brakes" ?

Engine 5 out of 5

Totally brilliant ! These V4 motors are unburstable. You soon find you don't rev a Pan out, all the grunt is produced in the low and mid-range which makes for a much nicer experience on a bike built for big journeys

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

Fantastic corrosion resistance, on 3 x ST1300 the only problem I encountered was a rear master cylinder replacement which wasn't cheap through the main dealer ! Tired suspension is usually the biggest problem as they are now quite old machines, but that's easily sorted and worth the money if you use the bike a fair bit

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5
Equipment 5 out of 5

I'm giving it a 5 as it has all it needs really - electric screen, ABS, pre-load rear adjuster and seat adjustment. If you want more equipment you will be buying more recent bikes and pay the cost accordingly

I ride 25k a year in all weathers from Rochester to Heathrow every day. Through London in the morning and round the M25 every night. And I don’t have a garage so the bike gets salted and frozen all winter. And unlike previous BMWs the Pan just takes it and keeps going. It’s cheap to buy, cheaper than a BMW to run, superbly comfortable and 100% reliable. On top of that when I go for a weekend blast it handles so much better than other riders can believe and when I hit the Alps in the summer it gets there with ease and then has me grinning all the way up the mountain passes.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Super comfortable with good brakes. BMW1200RT had better brakes but that could go through pads and discs like you wouldn’t believe.

I will never get bored with the smoothness and grunt from the big V4.

Version: St1300

Year: 2009

Annual servicing cost: £250

Heavy only when you haul it out of the garage. Weight disapperars once rolling. Very comfortable, reliable and reasonably quick. A utility bike more than anything with great panniers, heated grips and comfy seat. Buy it to get around on 2 wheels. Don't buy it for fun.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

Super comfy and very easy to chuck around at low speeds ( car parks, town etc). Stable and secure up to 100mph ( my 09, not so my 02). Over 100mph you need the screen down and you need to stay loose on the bike as even my 09 gets a bit edgy. The 02 was scary over 90mph. Heavily affected by dirty air from trucks....perfectly stable even at 120 plus in clean air ie empty motorways, no crosswinds. This sensitivity to dirty air is probably the source of the " weave" tales. Check carefully before you buy, as in my personal experience there are good ones and bad ones. My 02 was a bad one which wiggled at 70mph ( tyres right, no topbox, screen down, back end jacked up or soft). It wiggled like a bastard. Test ride essential. They are so good under 100mph that I gave it another go with my 09. Tested to 120 with screen down and it was fine. Note...a BMW K1200s I had a few years ago was rock steady at 140 plus....but....the low speed maneovrability was poor. All bikes are a design compromise. In UK 98% of the time you are under 100mph lets be realistic folks.

Engine 4 out of 5

Gutsy and does the job, quite rapidly if you wish, but essentially utilitarian rather than exciting. You get no high speed wails, no torque step, no overrun burbling...it just does the job, quicker, or slower depending on your right wrist.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

My second Pan, the first was an 02. Both have been 100% reliable. Not a hiccup out of either bike in 6 years of ownership.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Tyre pressure check and add fuel between services. That's all. It just goes.

Heavy only when you haul it out of the garage. Weight disappears once rolling.

Tyre pressure check and add fuel between services. That's all. It just goes.

My 09 has ABS and heated grips. They both work.

Been riding bikes since I was old enough and I'm now 65. This is a beautiful machine to ride for any age. A bit heavy I Agree but you can't have everything. Has it own sound. You can tell it's a Pan by the distinctive "whistling" engine. Low down centre of gravity makes the weight disappear as soon as you drive off. Love it

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Easy to ride all day. Covered 400 miles on motorway in one day and got off feeling okay. On my last "open" bike after a days riding I felt like I had gone twelve rounds with Mike Tyson

Engine 5 out of 5

Power delivery very smooth and gentle. Not at all snatchy. Easy going in heavy traffic. Done euro trip in 2015 and it went all day at 90 on autobahn fully laden in pouring rain. Still dry on arrival at hotel.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

Only problem has been the circlips on the exhaust system. Make sure you fit the stainless steel type and check them regularly

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Full service in 2017 was £150 including new plugs

Equipment 4 out of 5

Heated grips essential. Could do with up rating of standard equipment such as cruise control and satellite navigation.

Buying experience: Bought second hand from dealer. Now owned it three years and the only problem has been a "sticky" gear shift which I had to get my local bike shop to sort out. I couldn't get to the lever joints to oil it without dismantling quite a bit of the bike

5 out of 5 Best bike ever just dont lose the last key

Im a 36 year old guy who looks 26 and i ride with lots of mates on sports bikes. I have ridden 125cc bikes for 15 years and then i got a bandit 600. 6 months later i was sick of the lack of screen, storage, wind protection and small size. This bike is a beastie and i love it the features are epic the negatives are very few and far between. I went out for a ride with sports bikes who ride very fast and they laughed when i turned up but keeping up with them was no effort the bike can lay down power as the guy on the 600 found when he saw me coming up on the motorway and sped off. I put up the screen twisted the volume control and he was a distant memory. talking of screen mine came with a taller aftermarket and it keeps me bone dry and allows me to put it up to my chin height and open my visor with no wind no matter the speed the negative of that is this bike is very quiet and quick so the lack of wind can find you going into corners with a lot more speed than you want to. The storage on this bike is fantastic as are the mirrors and the lights are the brightest i have seen. It will power wheelie as i found out after getting bored watching my mates do it. With a quartet harness this bike will run anything you want and the glove compartments means you can finally charge your devices with no effort. As expected alot of mates gave me grief about buying what is generally thought of as a old mans bike until they rode next to it and i gave it some throttle. I don't like skinny little lean forward race bikes i like a bike to be a beast and this is that. Low speed handling is fine but be very wary of full lock turns over uneven ground as the minute it starts to tip its going down but the tip bars do a great job of preventing any damage. So far i have found this out 4 times so now i think about it more. Parking on hills should be thought out because you will never push this up hill to get out of a gap. On a final note if you ever buy a bike with this system and it only has one key take the key somewhere asap and get another do not wait. I dropped my key on gravel and the plate fell off and the chip fell out. After many hours searching i called honda to be told they have to change the ecu for £1200. Luckily i found a locksmith called ozgoods who i sent my ecu to and he brought it back and programmed me 4 keys for £300. The correct ecu is the rear 2 plug in the boot not the front 3 plug. This is a expensive mistake that i will never make again

Ultra smooth and locks onto lines nice. motorways are nothing with the electric screen and allow you to cruise at high speed with zero effort. The stock seat gives you monkey butt quick so a replacement is worth it. This bike eats miles

Engine 5 out of 5

plenty of grunt handles any loads

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

Forget chains no more getting grimy. Its built like a tank a very fast very smooth very comfortable tank.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

serviced myself so far

Equipment 5 out of 5

The panniers swallow a xxl helmet each or a fully loaded 12" tool bag with space for waterproofs jump leads and straps and thats just one side. Aim for one with Honda grips and you get the quartet harness letting you plug in another 4 items. A must is a 12v socket in the left box. The glove boxes are super handy as the right holds my disc locks so i can check before pulling away. Risers are a good buy as is a good seat which is next on my list. The electric screen is awesome Add a sj4000 in a motorbike case and you have a constant dash camera. deflector kit is nice on the lowers.

Buying experience: I brought from a dealer in north london who didnt bother servicing it gave me only one key and left the 300 mile tank with 2 miles of fuel in it. I paid £2600 for a 2002 with 82k

Needed a big tourer as my wife was saying that without a more comfortable bike than our Bandit 1250 GT she was going to give up biking. Realised that the choice was the Pan or Trophy after just sitting on most of the rest. BMW were never in it as, just for me, 2 cylinders sticking out of the sides is and always will be wrong. Visited Triumph dealer to be told that we would have to wait weeks to get a ride on a Trophy with a top box fitted and that was a new or used one which was unacceptable. Visited Honda dealer immediately after where we were able to instantly test a used Pan with top box. Sure for some the lack of cruise control and other electronics would put them off the Pan but for me that is a positive as I just don't need them. I was told by Pan owners that there bike had something and now after a few tours I completely get it. My wife is a happy pillion rider again.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Have ridden for 350 miles with only stops for fuel, food and toilets. Easy to cover big miles at speed in comfort.

Engine 4 out of 5

I also have a Suzy GSX1400 and am spoilt by its low down grunt so would have liked a little more low rev tractability so can't quite give it 5 out of 5 but its acceptable.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

So far perfect except for a recall for a small electrical glitch which was sorted by the dealer in a few minutes.

Value vs rivals 4 out of 5

8000 miles service interval is good and Honda servicing prices seem far more reasonable than those my mates who have Triumphs and BMWs have to suffer.

Equipment 5 out of 5

Needs extras to bring it up to spec for me but these are easily and reasonably available. Added top box with spoiler including high level brake light, Honda heated grips, additional air deflectors (Honda), tank knee and crotch pads, frame anti scratch protectors and a new TomTom sat nav as my old one was shot. Also purchased new pannier and top box liners from Ebay which are better and bigger than the Honda ones

Buying experience: Bought new from dealer. Paid list price but with top box. spoiler and grips thrown in. traded in bandit which was bought at a price I would have been very happy with privately so at that point very pleased. Got the addition of zero% interest and so my wedge of cash stays in the bank making a little interest. Vertu Honda were excellent in all ways.

A good strong, fast, comfortable and reliable machine but the weave that so many speak of and I never experienced is a bit daunting and always hangs over me like a dark cloud at motorway speeds

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Combined braking system seems to work well. Never needed the ABS but nice to know it's there and fingers crossed it doesn't give any abs trouble like the BMW's do.

Engine 5 out of 5

Very responsive. Any gear any time it is raring to go. Love the smoothness of it despite all that power. That raspy sound and whistle is a bit different but not in a good or bad way I guess that is just how they sound. Never had a V4 before

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

So far so good but it's only got 12k on it so I wouldn't expect any issues until that's been multiplied by at least 5 😜

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Do my own servicing so that helps keep the cost down but don't find the parts too expensive

Equipment 5 out of 5

Panniers hold a lot of stuff. Never bothered about a top box as apparently that can affect handling with the wind catching it 🤔

Buying experience: Took it in a trade in against a Harley Electra glide I was selling. Would never buy another HD. The pan ticks all the boxes

10 November 2013 by glentrammon

I've had my pan for 7yrs now in which time I've put22k on it,touring here and Europe I personally haven't experienced the dreaded weave but am not saying for a second it doesn't occur, because far better riders than me have had it.just in case it makes any diff when I bought it I put on a larger screen which has a cutaway at just over bar height which is supposed to reduce turbulence at speed.i don't go that quick to be honest, but I have on a very few occasions travelled at 110/125 for sustained periods when trying to make ferries etc abroad and whether it's the bike set-up or what I don't know but I swear I have never had the weaving or I can assure you I would have been off that throttle so fast rossi would be impressed!i allways travel loaded and with my wife on the back.aside from this I really think this bike is unbeatable, ours has never let us down once,a truly superb bike.

5 out of 5 Great Bike - Get One !
03 January 2013 by CharlieBiker

The ST1300 is a super long distance muncher and low cost commuter with plenty of luggage space. Recently rode 650 miles mostly in torrential rain - my bike has a deflector kit - the weather protection is superb, and no back ache! Low centre of gravity make it easy to ride on country B roads and heavy traffic. Relatively easy / low cost DIY maintenance makes it a great all round bike. My bike has done just over 58,000 miles and I guess is just run in. (My friend is a dispatch rider with 162,000 on his 2003 ST1300 - Honda tend to spend money on the bits that count). I can take or leave the ABS option - no big deal for me one way or the other. Regarding the 'weave' your only likely to get this if you ride it sustained at over 120mph with heavy loading and poorly adjusted / worn shock / forks and/or bad tyres and/or wrong tyre pressures. The bike has its own unique riding style - that will disappoint many 'boy racers'- and anyway hey who wants to lose their licence! You can now get a good early ST1300 for under £4,500 - get one, service it and you wont be disappointed.

5 out of 5 60 k miles on a 2003 Pan
23 October 2012 by jon0000001

I have ridden mine 60K miles. I still enjoy riding it every time. Very comfortable even after 500 miles in a day. Although it's heavy it’s well balanced, and I find it more stable at low speeds than the 600 which I had before. Cosmetically it has coped well with being ridden throughout quite a few winters, although the forks are tatty. Slight beginning of a weave if you accelerate hard at a high speed with screen up: so I won’t do that again. The electric screen failed after 50k miles, and a hose came loose, but apart from that it has been faultless. If you drop it on flat ground then the tipover wings can prevent any damage, which is not a sexy feature but could save a lot of grief. The V4 sounds great when unleash it. All in all an excellent bike!

Hi folks ,felt the need to reply to the so called cop with 10 years top class riding below.Quite simply mate your talking poop. The pan is a first class tourer with a superb build quality and a great balance between ride handling and power delivery.ive been riding pans for 23years and ive owned 2-3 bikes at a time including bmw and kawasaki tourers and im telling you they aint a patch on any pan old or new.this so called weaving is bollocks and is nothing other than rider ignorance and lack of experience.Read the manual set the bike up properley and your off with no wobbles or niggles. The police spec pans are very different to the road bikes and are set up to serve a different purpose and the poor bloke who found that out the hard way god rest his soul was very unfortunate.Ive been on many ride outs with bike cops who think that because they have been on a few extra trainning courses they are indestructible they are not.I would bet my life the death of the poor officer in question was caused mainly by human rider error more than anything else come on folks how many other folks have been killed riding them???.The pan is a fantastic machine and if riden and looked after properly will last you a life time take it from me ive put over 150,000 miles on an 02 model and it never broke down one single time. The media created the fear of so called weaving its horse shit and paranoia crossed with lack of experience. thanks for reading and its nothing personal special officer doofy just my strong opinion lol.

4 out of 5 Pan A8
28 November 2009 by mike760

I have owned my A8 for 6 months and only covered 4000 miles but have owned it long enough now to give my views. Pros: Economy is good at moderate speeds and acceleration; comfortably achieving 50mpg 2 up and loaded, thrash it however and you can halve this. Tank range up to 300 miles, going steady. Comfy ride for both rider and pillion. Good weather protection but found feet get cold unless tucked right in. Contrary to reports, servicing is reasonable being quoted £180 for a major service (8000). The interim being checks, I intend doing myself. Enough power to put a little grin on my face. Easy to ride and throw around considering its size and weight. I’m 5’7” and 11 stone! Cons: Mirrors adequate, but do make excellent wind deflectors. No gear indicator, power sockets are an extra. Not experienced weave but have only done 120! However, becomes very light if the wind is strong enough (at low speeds too) and in the wrong direction – I’ve put this down to the wing like shape of the fairing, which appeared to give the bike some lift. Economy around town is very poor so use my car to commute, as it’s cheaper and the bike’s size prohibits efficient filtering. Exhausts a little too quiet. Summary: Love it, you can get loads of extras (at a price) but know it’s going to last!

5 out of 5 Tale of Two pans
11 November 2009 by upthepalace

I'm on my second 1300 Pan. The first one, an '05 plate, had a very vague front end at high speed and a fair bit of movement as well from side to side and i'm guessing that this is what everyone calls the notorious 'weave'. I am meticulous about tyre pressures etc and tried different preload settings on the rear shock to solve it. I sold it because of the police version fatal crashes which got into my head and was affecting my riding. Recently though I have bought another one, a mint '02 model that belonged to a friend of mine which he said displayed no such behaviour and he's right. This '02 model is much better than my '05 one? Not only the handling, which is truly perfect but the motor feels smoother/stronger and the brakes are better too. So I can only guess that all of them are different in the handling department though I can't think why this would be? All I can say is that I am perfectly happy to give this particular Pan a 5 star rating in every category, it's utterly brilliant.

3 out of 5 what a weaver!!!
17 September 2009 by mark2jag

I was intending on buying a Pan European to replace my somewhat dodgy K1300 GT, but having done about 120 miles on a demo bike (admittedly an 05 with 24K on it) I have to say that the one I borrowed weaves quite a lot. Everything else is fine and dandy, goes like a train, stops really quite well, has a fantastic screen which does tend to keep most of the windblast off me,and by the way the screen being fully up is not the cause of the weave as it happens regardless of what position I leave the screen in!. I'm not going to give up on the idea, Just try and find a current 2009 model as opposed to a 2005 model, although was told today theres NO difference..... Any one care to comment on that????. A really rather nice bike spoilt by a weave that is unnerving to say the least and potentially bloody dangerous at worst. Ah well back to the drawing board. This style of bike is what im after so if anyone can think of a really smooth cruiser with large engine, non suspect handling(Oh and non shitty build quality AKA BMW!!) then I'd be interested to hear about it!!!

I have a 2005 ST1300 and it's great. Had it solo and two-up at 110mph on several occasions - no terrible weave, no massive tankslappers. In fact it feels more planted than my old CBR. Now YES there can be some buffeting at speed, usually when overtaking lorries on the motorway - especially with the screen up and a top-box on. What would you expect? - in these circumstances the pan has the aerodynamics of a fridge. If it bothers you, ride closer to the speed limit! My fave things about the pan: - Excellent low-speed balance and handling - Grunty motor with bags of power, even two-up - Electric screen allows you to ride with your visor open if you want - Loads of luggage space in the panniers - 200+ miles from a tank - I think the linked brakes work well Some criticism - A heavy bike to move around the garage at 300kg wet (but if I can do it at 5'7", it's not the end of the world) - The panniers get dirty because they act like a mudguard for the back wheel. - Not exactly pretty, especially from behind - The V4 engine sounds dull - Makes 90mph feel like 60!

4 out of 5 The ST's OK, OK!
26 May 2009 by Sixmaniac

I don’t understand the bad press from the Police and other contributors to this forum. My ST handles just fine for a sport tourer. I ride to the edge of the tyres, and it’s never done anything I wouldn’t expect from a 600+ lb bike. It’s not a Fireblade or 1098, but for what it is, I’d highly recommend it until Honda come out with a Blackbird replacement with another 200cc and ABS!

I bought this bike new in 04 and now the bike has over 43k miles on it. First of all i am a seasoned rider and have owned many bikes over the years so this is not the only bike i have had. I read some reviews on this bike and i can say i have never seen , felt or experienced this high speed problem. I have had the St many times to the red line and to me if feels as stable as any bike if not better. I have a givi trunk and i have had it over 100 mph a few times and it does make it handle differant as it would any bike. The only thing i had go bad was one of the head lights burnt out last year. It still has the original battery and i dont keep it charged either. I removed the oddly looking cans back in 05 and replaced them with the two brothers and i also added a K&N air filter. These two upgrades really makes this bike stronger. I have a friend that i ride with sometimes he has a 05 FJR1300. He has installed a full muzzy system with a power comander and K&N air filter. We have over the years ran from a low start to a 140 mph blast side by side and let me tell you that the St kept right beside him the whole way. He is a very experienced rider as well and knows how to ride. This is the best bike i have every owned, its more touring than sport to me but has the power to run sport. What i mean by that is i have rode my friends FJR for many miles, i feel the St is more comfortable to me than his FJR. Dont get me wrong i like his FJR it is a nice bike and when or if i decide to get another bike would probably get a FJR since the St is the same bike and only the color has changed. Yamaha does seem to make improvements over the years to the FJR and Honda has forgetten about improving anything to the ST. The paint seems to scratch easier than i seen on past bikes and road chips on the paint is present on the lower part of the St. Engine whine is loud on this bike and it dont sound like most bikes but once you get by that you can really relax and ride.

26 November 2008 by herringbone

Have a 2004 A4. Engine is very flexible, performs when asked and returns reasonable economy, so happy with that. Quality...a little disappointed with the finish on one or two things...doesn't seem to be holding up as well as I'd like. There's just that ride and handling connundrum.. More nimble than it has a right to be, so long as you remain committed, otherwise it can get a little unsettled and will sit up in protest. Fairing does a good job of keeping the elements off, but it is big, so it's not too surprising that it gets pushed around by the wind a bit, especially in the turbulence around lorries. Does it weave? I can't honestly say it weaves, but it doesn't really feel quite right either. It always feels like it's 'squirming'. Oddly enough its much more stable two up, which compounds my thoughts about it squirming. I tend to run the rear spring at the 'statndard' setting, but with the damping backed off a little further than standard as this seems to give the rear wheel a better chance of staying in contact with the road....

05 October 2008 by sportsboyuk

Now Honda have re set the bike up it Handles great remember this bike has steep head angle so hardening the rear preload makes it feel more nervious, Back it off put 42 psi in the tyres 43 rear and shes fine, screen down no handling issues. the engine has grunt any gear around twon easy, around country lanes fantastic, motorway very good. I wont tour on mine its here for a toy weekends so mega low miles and top condition its a 2008 4 weeks old. Had all the top sports bikes but fed up of wrist ache and back , neck ache after 100 miles. Plus to many bad car drivers, speed cameras, police in horse boxes, even a car towing a caravan parked up with cameras out the back, whatch out guys .not for mega sports bikes. set this bike up and shes awsome more than enough in the UK ps honda just need to make a V5 VFR 1000 or 1400 now light weight tourer. hint

got it as a Taxi but beeing out of london not as buisy as it could be. just been from stoke to the lizard with the wife on the back(she dont do motorways) so that was fine by me 350miles of nice A/B roads down on sunday back on tuesday never missed a beat and handles well. As for this speed wobble not had any probs unless the screen is in its high possition then you do get a back draft over the top.

5 out of 5 What a bike!!
25 June 2008 by Paul1810

I bought my 05 Pan in April and just returned from a week touring in Ireland with my other half. The bike was simply superb, just munches the miles up with no problems, returning approx 50mpg on all roads. It is so comfortable on long and short runs, and the wife managed to get all her gear into the panniers without complaint or sacfificing anything shewould noramlly take on holiday!! I now intend to keep this bike for a very long time as I cant see another bike doing what the ST1300 does as an all round package. Next week, off to South of France and I cant wait.

5 out of 5 Awesome!
16 May 2008 by mitch1111

Just toured Spain and West of England on mine doing about 3000 miles. Comfort is amazing almost like sitting on a sofa. Mine was well overloaded with panniers, topbox and wife and solid as a rock throughout including speeds 120+ (late for ferry!). Power is exceptional very fast when you need it and like a well mannered pussy cat when you dont. Last bike was CBR1100XX but would'nt trade back from my ST1300 no way! Excellent

10 February 2008 by daldry2504

Had to write a review on this bike again as now i am selling this bike at a significant loss due to me having alot of problems with a 70 mph weave this happened on a number of occasions now and honda have just shrugged there sholders at this problem which just isnt good enough. This is getting a big problem for these bikes as a friend has the same problem and had to sale his bike.I wish i could just burn the bike so no one else can ride it but have to have some money back even if it is a pittance. My advice for what it is worth get a BMW.

5 out of 5 Best motor bike so far
13 January 2008 by daldry2504

This bike is the best machine i have owned in 14 years of motorcycling. It is super smooth and efortless to ride even at low speeds where i hardley notice the weight.Me and my partner are quite large people and the bike handles well with us both on it and i plan to go European wide on it come the summer. Have noticed getting blown arround on it on windy days being the only gripe i have with it. The screen is handy and you could read a paper at 70 mph with the screen up fully (not recomended). I love the ammount of luggage space avalible and the top box with back pad is a comfy back rest for the Mrs. Interlinked brakes are spot on and a good safety feature. Overall this bike is excellent and you notice the fine ride it gives all you need for two up touring or commuting or what ever you need.

5 out of 5 Fantastic machine, upgraded from the ST1100 and I haven't stopped grinning in 4 years.
11 October 2006 by dozzzzy

This is my second bike, an upgrade from a ST100. The bike is fantastic and I have done 40000 miles on it touring around Europe. I ride all year round in all weather - apart from snow and ice. The only reason I am selling mine is I am due to emigrate to Canada, but I will be getting another one almost as soon as I arrive. Strengths: Speed, touring distance, comfort, solid performance and handling. Fantastic machine. Mechanically it is very strong. Loads of grunt. Handles beautifully especially in the twisty bits. Weaknesses: Finish on the front forks - the paint pealed within 6 moths of getting the bike, very soft paint work - easily scratched.

5 out of 5 Does exactly what it says on the box!
20 September 2006 by Alnwick1

Big, comfortable, fast as you could ever need, loads of carrying capacity, economical for such a big machine and handling way better than you might expect of a 'soft tourer'. I've ground down the hero blobs on both sides and I'm no knee down racer by a long way, it just leans over with a confidence inspiring stability. A bit of a weave around tghe steering head at 90-100mph, but nothing too disconcerting, and strangly enough not every time. Brilliant engine, ABS and electric screen set off the whole package nicely. If you're after a top tourer to take just you or you and the missus vast distances in comfort and have some fun when the road gets twisty, try the Pan for size. Strengths: Engine, comfort, handling, luggage capacity, tank range. Weaknesses: Unattractive instrument binnacle, lacks a bit of character.

5 out of 5 My Review
17 August 2006 by boroboy

This bike is simply brilliant,I bought it 6 months ago and have done 6700 miles since, without any problems, yes the servicing is dear, but all good things dont come cheap.I ride all year round in all weather and the Pan makes me feel safe in the wet,i have never been overtaken on my daily commute on the A1 by any other bike in any weather. Overall the whole ownership experience has been excellent. I ride two up regularly and my wife wouldnt get on anything else, total comfort, loads of torque, low down weight, great low speed control, fantastic at over a ton with a full load all day long. i will be keeping this bike for a very very long time. Strengths: Power at any speed in any gear when needed, bags of torque. Weaknesses: Dry weight can be a problem, you need to plan before you move it manually.

5 out of 5 Traded in a lump of BMW R1150 RT cr*p for this great secondhand machine.
02 April 2006 by burger

This is a great follow on from the ST1100.It's a great bike once you get used to its stand still weight. It is very stable on windy days so the weight must count for something.A great bike if you like gadgets, heated grips, electric screen, trip computer,Panniers, wind deflectors, what else do you need? I would have liked the Honda radio but at £500 I will do with my MP3 player and radio. Strengths: Street prescence, Style, Comfort, Handling,Everything on it works(take note BMW)Great Brakes. Although it requires servicing every 4,000 miles. It is basicly inpecting items as opposed to changing out.so costs are fairly reasonable.Has been used througout winter without showing any real winter wear( again take note Mr BMW). Weaknesses: Soft, easily scratched paintwork.A highly "stealable" bike as it is soooo good.

Apart from the weight and the slow speed steering ( What IS wrong with the fuel injection at slow speed?), servicing cost and parts I can't fault this machine.Did the the Alps to Switzerland and right round France and what a big comfy machine.Would I buy another one? NO because I'm keeping this one! Strengths: Comfort, Good fuel consumption with big 29 Litre tank, Luggage space, reliability. Weaknesses: Slow speed steering, cost of servicing and spares. The Weight is nearly 50Kg more than the FJR.
