Moto3: Canet wins, McPhee third in frantic Assen battle

Aron Canet has taken victory in the Moto3 class at the Dutch TT after a frantic last lap that saw the running order shook up, with Romano Fenati coming home in second and British Talent Team rider John McPhee signing off a difficult weekend with a ride from 19th to third.

Canet and McPhee were one of a number of riders who closed down the leading pack in the closing laps of the race, after a crash for Fabio Di Giannantonio and Enea Bastianini allowed the leading group headed by Joan Mir, Fenati and pole man Jorge Martin to escape from them.

That set up a climatic last lap that saw numerous wild moves from the lightweight class riders, with championship leader Mir leading at the start of the lap and coming home ninth, with Martin fourth and strong rides from Jules Danilo, Marcos Ramirez, Gabriel Rodrigo and Tatsuki Suzuki between Martin and Mir.

Home favourite Bo Bendsneyder’s race ended in drama behind that, with contact through the final chicane with Ramirez leaving the Dutch teenager on the deck and sliding over the line in tenth – but disqualified from the final running order, to give the spot to fellow KTM rider Nicolo Bulega.
