Moto3: Kent unsure what the future brings

Former Moto3 world champion Danny Kent has admitted that he’s unsure what the future brings for him as he completed yet another weekend wildcard appearance at the German Grand Prix, this time for the Red Bull KTM Ajo squad in the lightweight class.

But, after walking away earlier this year from the Kiefer Racing squad that he took to title success in 2015, he admitted to MCN after Sunday’s race that while he knew the consequences of the decision when he made it, it hasn’t been an easy transition to replacement rider – a role he’s expecting to fill for the remainder of 2017.

“This year is just going to be be of those years where I’m replacing injured riders, which is what I expected when I left Kiefer. But we’re on the scout everywhere for rides for next year, and we’re looking everywhere. I have to be honest with myself, but I know I can be fast on a Moto2 bike – I proved that at Mugello when I was fighting inside the top ten on the first time with the team and the first time on the bike. But on paper, it might not look too good for me in Moto2. But we have a few options already in Moto3.

“My career has suddenly turned around in the last two years, from where I turned down three MotoGP contracts in 2015 to go to Moto2 and now we’re even struggling to get a ride there and don’t even have one at the minute. But you can’t really expect too much when you leave a team half way through a season, I know that.”

And that challenge isn’t made any easier by difficult weekends like Kent endured at the Sachsenring. Struggling to break inside the top ten and then hit with a twelve place penalty for cruising during practice before crashing out of the race, the Brit put down his fall down to the constant change of the last few weeks.

“I knew going into the race that it was going to be difficult. The last time I rode for the team in Le Mans, I had a day’s testing beforehand, and the biggest thing for me is the tyres. The way the tyres work in Moto2 and Moto3 is completely different, and it makes it frustrating in a race weekend where you have to completely learn everything over again.”
