BSB: Realistic Irwin expecting to be closer

Glenn Irwin is confident the flowing nature of Thruxton should help him this weekend as he continues to recover from the dislocated and fractured elbow and shoulder he sustained at Knockhill.

The Be Wiser Ducati rider returned to action at Brands Hatch two weeks ago and while he struggled with the physical Kent circuit he was able to walk away with points in the second race despite being back seven weeks earlier than doctors had first suggested.

Irwin clocked up his debut MCE BSB rostrum at the super-fast Thruxton circuit last year, but he remains realistic ahead of the weekend despite expecting to be closer to the front.

“I found it amusing when I returned to action at Brands Hatch two weeks ago as I read some quotes about returning from injury,” Irwin said. “I did return but I certainly brought my injury with me, but now we are two weeks further on and arriving at a circuit which should be easier on my shoulder. At Brands Hatch, we ended race two content with points and just one second off Shakey’s fastest lap. I expect to be much closer this weekend but I must remember it’s only going to be seven weeks into a predicted 12-week lay-off.”
