The 2019 Honda CB500X is an adventure motorbike packed with a host of seemingly small engine, chassis and styling upgrades, but they actually add up to a lot, making it more capable than ever. It replaced the 2013-2018 Honda CB500X and was superseded by the 2022 Honda CB500X.

That will be music to the ears of the newer riders amongst us - this bike is A2 licence compliant - but it’s a machine that oozes so much class in just about every situation, it’ll impress the experienced, too. Power feels so much fatter than its 47bhp would suggest and just like a big capacity adventure bike it’s spacious, agile, plush, characterful and handles superbly both on tarmac and dusty off-road trails.

Finished and detailed like a bike costing twice the price, the CB500X is an exceptional machine. Its main competition comes in the form of the Chinese-built Benelli TRK 502.

Its go-anywhere capability also lends itself perfectly to adventure bike duties.

2019 Honda CB500X side profile

In 2020 the Honda CB500X won the Best Sub-500cc Bike gong in the MCN Awards. It can regularly be found in lists of the UK's best-selling motorcycles, too.

Build quality is extremely high considering the price and most examples are holding up well, but the fork legs are prone to corrosion. Although servicing can be on the pricey side, intervals are long (every 8000 miles), and the engine is super economical.

The CB500X is exceptional value as new, but it’s possible to pick one up for £3200 with around 12,000 miles on the clock and a couple of owners on the logbook. Or you can get a zero-mile 2018 model for £4995.

New longer travel suspension, a 19” front wheel (replacing the old 17-incher), Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour tyres and 10mm more ground clearance (up to 180mm), lets you do more than just bump up a city kerb.

It’s probably not going to handle the type of gooey green lanes we have in the UK, but on dusty gravel trails it’s more than capable.

Not having a gazillion bhp is a good thing off road and weighing just 197kg, the CB500X is much less of a handful than a big adventure bike. Steering lock is increased by three degrees (to 38) and bars are now 8mm higher and 3mm closer to the rider for more control. The Honda CB500X seat height of 830mm is 20mm taller than the previous version.

2019 Honda CB500X action riding shot side profile

Although the basic tubular steel diamond chassis remains unchanged, the 500X has new seven spoke Africa Twin-style wheels and revised Showa suspension.  It might be inspired to tackle the dirt, but the Honda is spectacular on the road, where it’ll spend most of its time.

It’s more flickable, planted and fun at any speed and more engaging than its naked and race rep CB siblings. Balanced, composed and with impressive grip from its semi-knobbly tyres, this is the CB500 to go for whether you’re commuting, scratching or everything in between.

Engine

Next up: Reliability
4 out of 5 (4/5)

It may still ‘only’ have an A2 licence-friendly 47bhp, but the way it surges forward on the throttle you’d swear it has a good 20bhp more.

That’s all thanks to new valve timing, a bigger airbox and a straighter inlet tract, which unlocks 4% more grunt between 3-7000rpm.

2019 Honda CB500X engine

The parallel twin motor is equally happy for you to ride its torque, or slice through its smooth new gearbox and thrash the Charlie and Ewan out of it. The CB500X constantly surprises you with its pace, as its new twin-piped exhaust can rumbles and spits on and off the gas. Power delivery, throttle and new slip-and-assist clutch are Honda-light and delicate to the touch. The clutch has an anti-stall feature that makes this bike even better for new riders.

Honda CB500X top speed? That'll be 112mph.

Next up: Value
5 out of 5 (5/5)

Honda’s CB500 range is extremely robust and mechanical problems are almost non-existent. Our 2019 Honda CB500X owners' reviews show highly positive remarks.

The negatives are around suspension, which can be upgraded if required, and one reader says it's not really suitable for carrying passengers: "Pillions need not apply though - the bike is not heavy enough and the suspension too soft - I tried it with the wife just the once!".

We have heard some earlier bikes suffer with water pump and coolant leak problems, though, and some owners report corroding fork legs.

Value vs rivals

Next up: Equipment
5 out of 5 (5/5)

Not only is the CB500X a bargain, running costs will be low, too. Service intervals are every 8000 miles and it sips fuel like a budgie. Honda claim 78mpg and a 305-mile tank range, which isn’t far off the mark.

When we took the 2018 model on our MCN250 test it managed over 312 miles on a single fill-up. You also get a Datatag, two years unlimited mileage warrantee and European breakdown cover.

The 2019 Honda CB500X's closest rival is the Benelli TRK 502, but it also takes on Fantic Caballero 500 Scrambler and the KTM 390 Adventure.

Equipment

3 out of 5 (3/5)

New ‘layered design’ angular bodywork, with more flowing panels, give a shaper, more Africa Twin-look (shame it’s not available in similar HRC colours) and there are powerful LEDs all round, but best of all are the detail touches that show just how much love and thought Honda has put into the design of this humble 500.

Radiator shrouds have been extended and the fuel tank is slimmer at the front to make it easier to move around. Honda says its improved airflow around the 20mm taller, two-way Allen key-adjustable screen (40mm between settings), but it’s still noisy at speed, like just about every other adventure bike out there.

2019 Honda CB500X digital dash

All 2019 CB500s get a new LCD dash, featuring all the important information you need, including a handy gear position indicator, fuel consumption data, race bike-style peak rpm indication and a shift light. Buttons are dash-mounted, leaving the switchgear clean and uncluttered. A Honda GPS mount can be fitted to the fairing bracket above.

A full range of official accessories are available, including luggage, heated grips, centre stand, fog lights and a 12V socket, as well as cosmetic and protective goodies.

Worthwhile Honda CB500X accessories

The CB500X is fairly basic in stock trim, but for those who do have aspirations of hitting the trail, Brit company Rally Raid stock an impressive range of upgrades to turn the Honda into a proper adventure machine with bash plates, off-road footpegs, uprated suspension, larger front spoked wheel, fog lamps and more.

For those happy to stick to tarmac, a larger more adjustable screen, handguards, heated grips and hard luggage are commonly found already fitted to used examples and make it perfect for solo touring or commuting.

5 out of 5 Superb all rounder

Version: 2019 Black

Year: 2019

Annual servicing cost: £200

The CB500X is one of my favourite bikes of all the many bikes I have owned. It is powerful enough for all types of riding I do, including cruising on faster roads, the commute to work and twisty B-roads. It gets up to speed quickly and the motor feels much more powerful than the 47bhp suggests. Clever design. It is well built and very comfortable. It is exceptionally frugal. My best ever is 102mpg. Thrashing it to the Cotswolds and back got me over 82mpg. That's impressive!

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

The bike excels on lumpy B roads. Its so comfortable. You just glide along. The riding position is perfect for me 5' 9" and I can almost flat foot it. It's light and nimble enough to hustle along any road. I can easily do 2-3 hours non-stop. I do not carry a pillion but it will do it if needed. The seat is well padded.

Engine 5 out of 5

Excellent Honda engineering making it feel more powerful that you think. Smooth power delivery. Motorway speeds are a piece of cake. Fuelling is perfect.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

4 year old bike. No corrosion anywhere. Keep on top of cleaning and it will last for many years. No coolant leaks or oil leaks. Doesn't burn a drop of oil between changes. Suspension is budget but nicely dampened and perfect for lumpy road surfaces. Preload adjustable forks and rear shock is ample enough.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Honda dealers may charge a pretty penny for services but you could look at it in a way that is justified for the fuel savings over other comparable bikes. Honda have a great dealer network and my local dealer is always helpful which massively helps.

Equipment 5 out of 5

It is basic. I have fitted a 12v socket and quad lock for iphone satnav. Aftermarket heated grips will be next. Still on the original crossmax tyres. They roll well and last well too.

Buying experience: Local Honda dealer was great. Been using them for years now. These bikes hold their value and you can see why they are so popular. Got a decent PX so was happy to pay the difference.

Cheap and reliable, high quality do-it-all motorcycling. Perfect for plodding around my end of the Peak District, and beyond. It's been to France and Spain a number of times, plus camping tours in the UK. Hard work on long motorway rides as it lacks high end power.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

Absolutely perfect for Peak District plodding and very light off-road. Not ideal for fast motorway riding, though it will do it. I typically take a break at 2 hours.

Engine 4 out of 5

Good low-down torque (for a 500cc), but starts to run out of performance above 60mph. It can easily maintain the national speed limit and beyond.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

Not faults whatsoever in 3 years (14,000 miles).

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Service costs include replacing usual consumables like tyres, chains etc. It's cheap to run in every respect.

Equipment 4 out of 5

Basic, but all you REALLY need is fitted as standard, apart from heated grips, which are an essential in the UK (IMHO). All bikes will need 'customising' to suit the individual riders needs. Mine's been racked up with Givi top box and panniers, heated grips, Honda comfort pack (inc centre stand) engine crash bars and a host of other minor improvements. A cheap windscreen extension has transformed the wind protection (highly recommended).

Buying experience: Dealer px. Bike price was ~£6100. though I also ordered some extras which increased the price considerably (Honda comfort pack and service plan).

5 out of 5 Excellent “Go Anywhere” All-Rounder.
24 December 2021 by Colin Leighfield

Year: 2020

It has an excellent balance of performance, handling, comfort, fuel economy and long range. Despite being only 500cc, it’s a very capable long distance tourer and easily able to hold legal-limit cruising speeds all day on unavoidable motorways! I have done journeys of over 1,800 miles in a week with average 84 mpg. Terrific value for money and I don’t feel any need for a bigger, heavier bike with a performance I can’t use legally and uses twice as much fuel. Great fun to ride as well, smiles all of the way.

Ride quality & brakes 5 out of 5

Genuine all-rounder. Comfortable for three hours or more between breaks. With a touring tank range of around 300 miles, you don’t need to stop very often. I don’t carry a passenger any more.

Engine 5 out of 5

Excellent mid-range makes it feel bigger than 500cc and you don’t need to rev it high in the gears to make good progress. Smooth and practically vibrationless at cruising speeds. No bad features.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

No defects, no corrosion.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5
Equipment 4 out of 5

Basic specification is good, top-box and panniers extra. I don’t think you should have to pay extra for a centre-stand though, to me it’s essential. The original Dunlop tyres were good and wear well.

Buying experience: Honda dealer, list price, but I get very good back-up and service.

Best , size, weight, engine, price, availability of aftermarket support. Biggest grin when riding Highly recommend

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

Seat is not the best in the world although it gets better after the first 1000 miles, good shape but will upgrade

Engine 4 out of 5

Engine is brilliant, you can rev the top off have great grinworthy riding on the A & B roads and almost stay inside the legal limit. Be careful it has no traction control, which my last email bikes had, so if you give it fistful in the first 3 gears it will come up at the front end, incredibly frugal on fuel, minev is averaging 81.2 to the gallon.

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

Great build quality, easy to clean, good dealer and spares back up, all over the world, low servicing costs, ease of maintenance. No faults to date

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

Running costs extremely low, tyre prices good

Equipment 3 out of 5

It's adventure styling, riding position, frugal motor and reliability. Top additions, No 1 cheapo Ebay screen extender with screen on lowest setting. Forget going down the Puig, Givi etc route . I am 6'1" 200lbs 32" inside leg and both feet heat on the glorious with enough bent leg for all circumstances. Standard screen is OK but soon gets noisy with windlass straight at the visor. Cheapo screen extender and it us now as good as my 2011 GS1200Adv. Oxford heated grips a third of the price of OEM, purchased from and fitted by Main dealer to an ignition source. Givi Trekker outback top box and cans, all I need for daily or extended tours. Usually have the 'single' full face top box on, daily, you enable filtering and can fit the later half soft bags if I wish. Riding with 'cans' on does knock the fuel consumption a bit ( maybe need to design a streamline fairing to go on the slab front of each can) Centre stand is a must for chain maint and 'down route' puncture repair. Scot Oiler for very much extended chain and spocket life and ease of cleaning. Despite what Scot Oiler say, go for either of the electronic versions ( I have the 'X' model) the vacuum model is the biggest reason for engine fault codes being reported to Honda. Aux power socket, so that you can charge 'Stuff' in your tank bag Next additions, non magnetic tank bag for glasses, phone etc ( magnetic ones scuff the paint unless you for a protective film. Rally raid or similar wider footrests also lowered a little. After market comfy seat, up to 30mm higher. Engine and tank crash bars Aux driving lights

Buying experience: Main dealer new. Price at time of ordering £6019, 6week wait for delivery, hit the new registration £6199 paid for bike but did have a few extras fitted

My first impression was, yeah, not bad, but the bike really grows on you. Everything is just right. Not too heavy and easy to add accessories to it. Everyone should try one. Not a bike just for A2 licences - feels like a proper old school bike.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

Loves to rev - over 6000 rpm it really comes alive. Extremely comfy over distance. Front brake could be better but it does stop you when needed. Generally do 150 miles between breaks but I am 70 and the bladder will not be ignored. Brilliant bike for twisty B roads but ok on motorways too.

Engine 5 out of 5

Revvy and fun - enough power but not so much you will get into trouble - you can really use 100% throttle which is fun. Clutch is very light and gearbox is slick. Incredibly frugal motor - pinning it most of the time I rarely get less than 80mpg

Rock solid.

ABS is the total electronic assistance you get. I'm tall and a wind deflector on the screen really quietened things down at motorway speeds. Exhaust has a lovely throaty note and bubbles on the over run.

5 out of 5 City commuter
25 July 2020 by Duncan

Year: 2019

My 8th bike, first one I’ve bought to commute in London. Always been outside of London in the past on sports bikes. So it’s Ulez compliant, and has incredible mpg. It updates on the dash constantly and suffice to say you will be saying really 81 mpg?! Really. Bike has a great finish, lots of extras you can get. Comfortable riding position for me 5 ft 8. Superb mirrors and easy to manoeuvre in traffic. For me it doesn’t feel that quick, but it’s moved quickly enough. Gear changes are rapid and it’s got plenty of torque. IIt’s what I wanted, a super reliable bike with great mpg, that can carry stuff and only needs an oil change every 8,000 miles. Brakes are good enough, not super powerful, but responsive. Overall I like, which is good because it’s my daily now.

I wanted a second bike for commuting and some light off-road riding but at 5ft 7 I didn’t want the size and weight of a big adventure bike. I bought this based on many positive reviews online and haven’t been disappointed. It’s very light and nimble which makes it a breeze to ride on the B roads, the engine has enough power to keep me entertained and it’s proving to be a good buy. I’ve owned a variety of bikes over 28 years and this is one of the best I’ve had. Easy for a new rider to handle yet still fun for the experienced.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

Very easy to ride quickly on the back roads, feels like a supermoto on the twisties, the suspension is soft and comfy on most roads, though the lack of damping shows up on the rougher stuff. Suspension upgrades would benefit the bike somewhat. Brakes are adequate but I plan to experiment with different pads and also try different tyres. The gearing is low which is fine for town and B roads but it’s revvy at motorway speeds, higher gearing would be on the cards if I planned to tour.

Engine 5 out of 5

Surprisingly good and entertaining, feels way more than 47bhp with a nice exhaust sound. Keep the revs above 4K and it’s shoves along nicely which works well with the light handling. Clutch assist is good with smooth gearbox. Clock shows 93mpg!

Reliability & build quality 5 out of 5

Good overall finish to Honda standards. 8k service intervals keep me happy though likely to do my own oil changes in between.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

145 first service.

Standard screen wasn’t great, buffeting at either setting, I changed mine for a small powerbronze sports screen which suits my riding and improves the looks. Plenty of info on the clocks inc gear indicator but could be brighter as I find it hard to read in the sun. Tyres are fine but look like they’ll wear out quickly. My paddock stand doesn’t fit as it fowls the exhaust so it needs a centre stand, though some aftermarket sump guards are not compatible with the honda stand. I use an enduro lift stick for chain adjustments. There’s loads of rally raid products for this bike so can be customised to suit.

5 out of 5 Small Bike Big Adventure.
30 May 2020 by Bob

Version: Matt Black version

Year: 2019

I bought this bike as I couldn't manage my Suzuki VStrom 1000 any longer due to Parkinsons disease. I needed a bike with a super smooth clutch action and an easy going throttle - the CB 500X has Clutch Assist and a light throttle. I don't suffer fatigue on this bike unlike the Vstrom which would have me pulling over for a good rest after 60-70 miles. I've now had 23 bikes some good some bad and some great - The CB500X is one of those great bikes. Almost anyone will have a lot of fun on it...I do! I've given an overall rating of 5 but only if you are not much more than 12st without gear as the suspension is a bit bouncy on uneven roads. I won't be uprating it as I live in Wales where most of the roads are very smooth. A suspension upgrade should improve things, but might take away the liveliness of this bike.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

The CB500X is happiest one up cruising between 60-75mph, it will do 90+, but its not built for it and not very enjoyable. It'll work on all manner of roads and the handling is just brilliant - this is the fun factor of this bike. Pillions need not apply though - the bike is not heavy enough and the suspension too soft - I tried it with the wife just the once! Brakes are weak but are greatly improved with a double sintered pad from EBC (about £25.00)

I can't believe this is a 471cc motorcycle. Its very nippy around town, and no slouch on faster roads. I can ride for hours now and best of all my mate on his Triumph Explorer 1250 cannot keep up in the twisties!

Typical great Honda finish. I have the matt black version which looks great, but don't polish it as it won't be matt for much longer. The book actually warns about this.

Value vs rivals 5 out of 5

I am a brisk and purposeful rider, not a thrasher or slug and I regularly get 75-80mpg. Amazing!

Equipment 4 out of 5

The basic equipment is good - Clutch assist/Slipper clutch, ABS and cool instrument panel. Does'nt need all the bells and whistles you get with much more expensive bikes - One of the qualities I like about the CB500X. Oh and the screen is not bad at all. Centre stand is not included in the new price but necessary if only to adjust the chain. Yes are only ok as the rear was done after 3.5k miles. There are much better tyres out there, namely Bridgestone A41 will last 7-8k so I've been told.

Buying experience: Bought from Thunderoad Cwmbran March 2019 for RRP of £6,199. Traded in my VStrom. The deal was OK.

Just got this bike new before the lock down, its an easy to ride, comfortable everyday to work bike that seems to be doing about 70 plus mpg with ease.It can shift if needed and the gearbox is the best of any motorcycle Ive owned (30 plus so far) I would recommend buying this bike to anyone just starting to ride or even to someone who has experience but needs a bike for everyday work use.Fairly priced and looks alot more expensive than it actually is.

At its best on A roads, twisting roads and through traffic with its higher position for the rider now thanks to the taller wheels post 2019.Brakes are excellent(bear in mind though I love Harleys...) no pillion yet

Engine 4 out of 5

Its only 47bhp so its never going to get too scary, the power comes on gradually and overtakes have to be planned as this is not a sports bike.

Good service intervals Honda say nothing now needed until 8000m after first small service ie oil change and checking all still tight and screwed together

standard tyres do the job you get with bike, like the screen and the display is easy to read with none of the sun issues other digital displays can have.

Buying experience: I bought the bike from a dealer and they were great, they encouraged me to try similar size bikes on test at their dealership in Bristol and I think were honest about the bikes capabilities and spot on with just how good the bike is as an everyday, reliable economical machine.I paid I believe £5800 and to be honest I reckon its worth more than that.Ive had non biking friends comment on how good it looks and surprised at the fact its only a 500,so don,t be put off by the small engine size if image matters to you.I think the 2019 to 20 upgrade, especially the taller tyres has produced a better bike.
