MILAN SHOW: Ducati reveal Scrambler Café Racer

There should be laws about having number boards on bikes. Get your magic eraser out, and this new Café Racer looks so much better without them. The 54 is a nod to legendary Ducati racer Bruno Spaggiari, but that’s going to be rather lost on the average buyer.

The Café Racer, just like the Desert Sled, is a new addition to the family for 2017, and is intended to do exactly what it says on the tin. Much of it is very nice, too – and in black and gold (or ‘Black Coffee’ as Ducati dub it), it’s also little redolent of the JPS era of sportsbikes.

It appears, in essence to be a Full Throttle with a brace of design changes to create the café look. But still in residence is the lovely Termignoni exhaust with black anodized cover, while the stubby café racer seat unit reminds us strongly of the original Monster family rear-end. The sharp-eyed will spot the pillion pegs, which also point to the fact that the cowl pops off to reveal a small pillion perch behind the canted forward rider’s seat.

Much of the café feel is also created by ditching the traditional handlebar in favour of a pair of aluminium clip-ons, while the lack of a subframe mounted numberplate hanger – it’s mounted via the swingarm instead – helps to create that classic café racer silhouette. Just like the Desert Sled, it’ll dent your coffee budget to the tune of £9395.
