Barry Sheene race car up for sale

1 of 1

A 1985 Toyota Supra that was raced by Barry Sheene will go up for sale on July 27 at the Silverstone Classic Race Car auction, with a guide price of £60,000-£80,000.

The car was raced a year after Sheene retired from motorcycle racing in 1984 and was used in the British Touring Car championship – known then as the Trimoco RAC British Saloon Car Championship.

The Supra features a 2759cc, straight 6, DOHC ‘Group A’ Toyota engine that saw Sheene take it to podiums in his time racing the car – with a third position at Thruxton and Silverstone during the 1985 season.

TOP STORIES

The car was invited to the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it ran the hill as part of the Barry Sheene tribute.

Records have shown that the car was later sold on Feb 1, 1987 by Toyota GB Ltd to Diamond Motorsport and has been validated by Gordon Mayers, who was the Team Manager in the period.

The car still carries a current SORN V5 and has seen thorough restoration work carried out in 2012. This included major overhauling of the fuel system, clutch, suspension and braking system. The engine was also put on the dyno by renowned engine builder Ric Wood and was shown to produce 204bhp.

It’s not cheap, for your £60-80k, but it’s understandable considering its rich racing heritage. And at the very least, it comes with a wide range of both new and used spares.

The car will be put up for auction on July 27 at the Wing building at Silverstone Circuit. The auction is a closed event and those wishing to place a bid or view the auction will need to have an event ticket along with an auction catalogue.
