The four-time World Superbike champion suffered 11 broken ribs (initially thought to be only two), a collapsed lung and a broken shoulder while racing at the eccentric two-day DirtQuake event.
From his hospital bed he then apologised to his wife, Michaela, and promised never to race again.

Foggy had been putting in a series of extremely committed performances right up to the moment he crashed, winning five out of six heats, and was favourite to win at least three of the finals in the Wacky Races-style Pro-Am event.
The crash happened in the Hooligan race when he highsided his bike at about 70mph coming out of turn two, while trying to chase down fellow Triumph rider and TT star, Gary Johnson.
After lengthy paramedic treatment on the track he still managed to offer a thumbs up to the Sunday crowd, before disappearing into the waiting ambulance.
Carl said: “It was going great, then I had a little crash. Two broken ribs, a punctured lung and a broken shoulder blade. Nothing really too bad!
“You can see all the fun, madness and mayhem on Wednesday night on ITV4. Thanks to everyone for their best wishes, except Mrs F, who hates me right now. I promise I’ll never do another race again.”
We’re not sure we trust his final assertion, but hope that he’s back to fighting fit as soon as possible.
