213.3mph wheelie sensation
Dutch rider Egbert van Popta has set a new record for the world’s fastest wheelie at Elvington Airfield, North Yorkshire. A stunning 213.3mph saw him overtake the 209.8mph record set by Liverpool’s Gary Rothwell last year.
Egbert was riding a turbo’d Suzuki Hayabusa for the event, which took place at Elvington Airfield as part of the Motorcycle Wheelie World Championship.

Popta broke the record on his second attempt, posting the 213mph run, with Rothwell posting the second fastest time of 206mph. There were around 40 other rivals in total, with competitors coming from the UK, France, Holland, Ireland and the USA.
The Motorcycle Wheelie World Championship is an annual event now in its 11th year, held at the ex-RAF Elvington Airfield. Competitors have to complete a full kilometre on the back wheel with the fastest exit speed recorded marking the winner.
