Ted Brady sets new wheelie record

Ted Brady has set a new wheelie world record over one kilometre with a top speed of 217.85mph.

Brady set the new record during the Motorcycle Wheelie World Championship at Elvington Airfield, North Yorkshire on Saturday, August 19 to beat the previous record of 213.3mph set at the same event last year by Egbert van Popta.

Brady has been competing in the high speed event since 2005 and set the new record on his turbo-charged Suzuki Hayabusa which produces ‘about 540bhp’ according to Ted. The bike was built by Jack Frost of Holeshot Racing, who recently had his team van stolen along with several bikes including his own land speed bike. Ted dedicated his victory to Jack.

The Motorcycle Wheelie World Championship is an annual event now in its 12th year, held at the ex-RAF Elvington Airfield. Competitors have to complete a full kilometre on the back wheel with the fastest exit speed recorded marking the winner.

A marathon, not a sprint

The speed Ted was able to achieve on his Hayabusa to win this year’s Wheelie World Championship event is staggering, but he’s not the only one-wheeled wonder to ride into the record books this year.

Japanese rider Masaru Abe managed to wheelie his Yamaha Jog for an astonishing 310 miles.

And of course Dougie Lampkin wheelied the entire length of the Isle of Man TT circuit last year on a modified trials bike.
